Her eyes widened.

“But?” she asked, confused.

“The situation changed.” Cain sat back and shook his head, looking regretful.

What did that mean?

She narrowed her eyes. “We weren’t a weather pattern, Cain.”

Exasperated, he dropped his beer. “I can’t explain it to you. I...I can’t. But I made a mistake, all right. One I cannot change.”

Her mouth dropped open.

“That’s all I can say.”

Her mind whirled, trying to understand what he was saying to her. What couldn’t you change?

A child.

“You cheated on me?” she gasped. “Oh, my God, did you get someone pregnant?”

“No. Not in the way you think,” Cain answered, shaking his head. “There was no woman.”

“With a guy?”

“Jesus, Bella. No. I can’t tell you. I just wanted to see you.” He ground out. “I just wanted you to know I did love you. I...shouldn’t have left.”

What was he saying?

Did he still love her?

If there was no woman, then he lied.

There was no child.

Then why?

But whatever it was.

“Did you want to see me to say sorry? Because you haven’t,” she snapped, pushing her glass away. “Not once in over an hour have you apologized. You haven’t told me anything about your life or who you are now. Then you tell me you did love me and give me no reason for walking away.”

Cain blew out a long breath.

She was shaking; she was so mad.

Where was Blake? She wanted his big, strong presence, to feel his shoulder beside hers, his arm around her. With his eyes on hers, knowing he had her back.

Was he okay? Was he still mad? And more importantly, had he left because he liked her way more than he was admitting?

Was there a small chance he might love her?

Because it was clear as day as she sat here talking to Cain that he wasn’t the man she thought he was, and he had never been good enough for her.

She gathered up her jacket and purse, making to leave, when Cain stopped her with his hand on her arm.

Bella’s head snapped up.

“Wait. You want to know about my life, Bella?” Cain asked.
