“That’s rather last minute,” Mr. Hillard said, snapping her attention back to him.

“I’m sorry. As I said, it’s personal and has come up suddenly,” Bella lied.

“Hmm.” He dipped his head and glanced at her over his glasses. “You can have a day.”

Shit.

“Sir, I’m afraid that—”

“Ms. Montgomery, there are many people who would like your job. Giving us zero notice is just not acceptable.”

He was right.

But she had three months to get Blake’s contract locked in, become the woman she needed to be to take over Kennedy Enterprises, and get married.

Art history was her love. She might not be able to work on it now, but as a billionaire she could find a way to be involved in and support the arts.

Not today, but soon.

“You’re right. This is unfair and I apologize. One day I will explain, but for now, I need to hand in my notice,” Bella said, clasping her fingers together in front of her.

His eyes widened. “That’s a little rash. All I’m asking for is at least a week’s notice, Bella.”

She nodded. “Unfortunately, I am unable to do that.”

Dick knew she was Ward Montgomery’s daughter. He was generous in his donations to the arts. She could see the director calculating the impacts of his previous words and wanted to reassure him.

“Mr. Hillard, it’s okay,” Bella said, taking a step closer to his desk. “This is a family matter which is going to take a big chunk of time. I will always appreciate you giving me my job and will have fond memories of working here.”

He nodded.

Apprehension on his face.

“Let human resources know, and I wish you well, Ms. Montgomery. Tell your father I said hello.”

She smiled warmly and nodded. “Thank you.”

Hurdle one, she thought, as she walked out of his office. Now, she had to get to her attorney’s office before lunchtime and map out this very unusual contract to present to Blake.

Then she was having dinner with Ward and her brothers. Until the contract was signed, she wasn’t saying a thing.
