“Dad?” I quiver.

I meet his teary gaze.

“I need you to hear me out for a minute without speaking. Can you do that for me?”

I nod once scared of what he’s going to tell me.

“Years ago I knew this girl called Viola. She was my best friend in the whole world. We did everything together since we were five years old. I loved her very much and would have done anything for her. But she grew up surrounded by bad people. Her life was constantly under threat because of who her father was and what he did for a living. Her father was a man called Ian Maloti.”

Ian Maloti? Where have I heard that name before.

“Viola was the daughter of a prolific crime boss who was going to marry her off to the son of his enemy in a peace between them. A marriage she did not want. Three weeks before the wedding she sent me a letter that contained a secret she could not share with anyone because she knew that they wouldn’t protect her. That they couldn’t protect you.”

“Me?” My lip quivering uncontrollably because I know deep down what he is about to say.

“Viola was six months pregnant with you, Jordin. She was planning on running away but first she needed my help.”

I gasp as the world I know crashes down around me. It was all a lie. James isn’t my dad and that means that Millie...

I swallow the bile rising in my throat.

“Who am I?” I bite out through tears that stream down my face.

“Your real name is Jordina Maria Maloti,” a man’s voice calls out from behind me. It startles me so much I almost jump out of my seat.

Turning I see a man with grey hair walk into the room with a walking cane that sits above a golden skull, encrusted with black diamonds for eyes that would haunt you in your dreams. It’s the same man I danced with at the wedding.

“Welcome home. Granddaughter.”

“Granddaughter? I think you’re mistaken sir. I’m not you’re granddaughter,” I scoff turning to mom. “I’m dreaming right. Tell me this isn’t true?”

I watch her grief-stricken face fall in her hands sobbing uncontrollably. What the fuck is happening right now? This can’t be real.

I look back to dad. “My mom’s name was Tiffany not Viola. That’s what you said.”

He doesn’t look at me.

“Daddy?” I whimper.

“James is not your daddy Jordin. Your DADDY is dead for the rape of my daughter,” the old man bites out.

My trembling hands cover my mouth.

“Rape?” I repeat in horror.

I want to be sick. I need to be sick. Running to the wastepaper basket next to dads desk I empty the contents of my stomach until I’m wrenching. Mom rushes to my side to hold back my hair but I push her away.

“There was no need for that Ian,” dad yells. “That’s not true and you goddam well know it! I told you I wanted to do this my way. To tell her MY WAY,” dad yells.

“You had your fucking chance years ago James. You should have told me about her years ago. You and Marcus had no right to keep her from me. To have my own flesh and blood lie to me for years,” he says enraged. “No wonder why he was so adamant we didn’t use you for his case. You put her in danger exposing her to the Garo’s at that fucking wedding and now they know exactly who she is.”

“Garo? What does the Garo family have to do with this?”

“Please just...just allow me to explain to her Ian. PLEASE. I’ve kept her safe for all these years. Please let me explain why I’ve just broken her heart in two and shattered everything she’s ever known.”

“Make it quick,” Ian demands tapping his cane in anger.

“Jordin look at me.”
