“Baby, look at me. Tell me the truth. Did he fucking hurt you?” I demand quietly.
When she nods and I see red.
“I’ll fucking kill him.”
She turns to face me with a concerned look.
“You can’t, Caleb.”
“The hell I can’t. If he put his hands on you he’s a dead man.”
“You don’t understand.”
“Then make me understand. What is it that makes you so scared? Have you learnt nothing of who we are? Of who The Thorns are and what we do to people like him?”
She’s hesitant for a second but when the next words come out of her mouth all I see is a faceless man’s blood splattered on the dirt.
“He has pictures of me. Pictures he’s using to keep me chained to him. Pictures that he could use to ruin me and my family if they got into the wrong hands.”
“Pictures? He has pictures of you? Of your body?”
“Yes. Don’t you see, that’s why I have to go back to him in the summer. He says he will use them against me if I don’t and he means it, I know he does.”
“He won’t,” I spit out furious at the nerve on this prick. I’ve done some pretty fucked up shit, but this takes the biscuit.
“He will. I don’t have a choice.”
“We’ll see about that.”
“Caleb, you can’t. You don’t know what he’s capable off.”
“And you do, is that it?”
She blows out a strained breath, “I don’t want to talk about him anymore. Can we please just drop this?”
I sigh in defeat not wanting to piss her off because I just got her back when I could have lost her. She makes me feel things I’ve never felt. Makes me want to be a better man for her. I want to protect her in this messed up world that we both find ourselves in. Our only escape is in each other and now that I have her I won’t let go. But that doesn’t mean I will let go of her past by any means. He will pay for hurting her. Shouldn’t be too hard to track him down and when I do, I will make sure he never looks at another picture of her or any other woman ever again.
“Come here,” I coo her with my arm stretched wide. She leans into me allowing me to pull her into my arms holding her tight.
“I won’t bring him up again. I promise.” I don’t need to; I know all I need to know.
“Thank you.”
“But that doesn’t mean I’m going to forget about it either.”
“Caleb,” she warns in annoyance pursing her lips.
“Shush baby. We don’t want to wake dear old grandpa up now do we?”
She rolls her eyes.
“Keep that shit up and I’m kicking you out.”
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“Watch me smartass.”
“My girls getting brave.”
