“Thank you,” she responds meekly.

“I believe you may have already met my family but allow me to reintroduce you. This is my son Eric, and his wife Kelly.”

“It’s nice to finally meet you,” Eric says shaking her hand.

Jordin returns his greeting before Kelly steps in.

“It’s so good to see you again darling,” Kelly tells her pulling her in for a tight hug. She hugs her back only to be pulled away by Lexy who grips her tight. They giggle embracing each other as if they were sisters.

“I believe you already know my stepdaughter and my boys Saint and Caleb.”

She stills in Lexy’s hold at the sound of my name. That’s it baby, I’m here. There’s no need to be afraid.

“I do,” she replies giving me a full toothed smile.

There’s my girl.

“We all go to school together,” Saint informs his father and grandfather. “Jordin and Lexy are very good friends. Isn’t that right Lexy?”

“Best friends actually,” she corrects him squeezing her hand.

“Good. That’s good. It will make things a lot easier in the long run,” Francis says.

Saint looks at his grandfather with the same look of confusion as I do.

What the fuck was that supposed to mean?

“And on that note Jordina,” Ian says taking her by the hand. “It’s time to properly introduce you. Please excuse us for just a second,” Ian says leading her away. When she turns back to look at me again and I almost break.

I’m coming baby. I’ll be there tonight I want to tell her, but I can’t. All I can do is watch as Ian leads her past the dance floor and up on to the small stage in the centre of the room.

Taking hold of the microphone on the stand he clears his throat to gain everyone’s attention.

“Ladies and gentlemen. Can I have your attention for a moment please.”

The call of silence echo’s around the room as the chatter of the guests begins to quiet down.

“It brings me such joy to see so many of you here tonight. To set aside our differences, coming together for a special occasion such as this one. To celebrate the return of my granddaughter who was stolen away from me. To watch her take her rightful place by my side as a Maloti.”

He raises a champagne glass high in the air.

“Please join me in a toast to welcome home Jordina Maria Maloti. The lost granddaughter returned.”

“Here, here,” the crowd cheers followed by an applause.

Ian takes a sip of his champagne then turns to face Jordin.

“It broke my heart when I lost her mother but I feel as if we have been given a second chance to put right the past just as they should have been many years ago.”

Ian addresses the audience again.

“Eric, if you would be so kind to join me.”

The audience gasps in wonder of what’s happening. So do I.

I glower towards Saint as he watches Eric step up to the stage to join them.

“What the fuck is going on?” I ask no one in particular.
