“What do you mean no?” I mutter. “What more do you want from me?”

Caleb gently strokes my face wiping a fallen tear away with his thumb. “I don’t accept your apology. I want you to earn back my forgiveness. You’re in my school now princess. Mommy can’t save you this time. From this day forward I own you.”

He skims his thumb over another tear this time lifting it into his mouth.

“Tastes so fucking sweet.”

I’m too stunned to speak.

He owns me. What does that even mean?

His eyes shift from Colton to Saint. “Let’s not bruise our fresh fruit on the first day.” He then shifts his gaze back to me. “We like to play before it turns sour.

A beat passes before he gives Saint and Colton a tight nod and my arms fall free.

Relief floods me watching the three of them leave the room. Just as the door is about to close Caleb turns back to look at me, his eyes casting down to me rubbing my sore wrists.

“What do you mean you own me?” I ask not really wanting to find out the answer.

“You’ll soon learn that around here defiance has a price princess.”

He finally leaves closing the door behind him plunging me back into the darkness of the stuffy room. Sliding to the floor I run my hands through my hair. How did this happen? This wasn’t the plan. I was supposed to lie low, start again but now things couldn’t be any worse. I single handily managed to piss off the worst people in this school. Tears falls down my face until I remember that Lexy is still in the parking lot waiting for me.

One day at a time. I’ll worry about this tomorrow, I tell myself.

Pulling myself from the floor I stand wiping the tears from my eyes and the dust off my clothes. Outside the room I pick up the book I dropped then retrieve my backpack before making my way to Lexy.

Chapter Sixteen

Jordin

Lexy’scarisoneof four cars left in the student parking lot. She’s listening to some song on the radio I don’t recognise, turning it off when I get in.

“I was beginning to think you’d gone home.”

I can’t dump my problems onto her on top of everything she’s already got going on with them. I make up a story knowing it wouldn’t be fair to burden her more.

“The Liberian had a hard time finding the book I needed. Sorry for making you wait so long.”

“I’m just joking. Trust me I know how slow Mr Krane can be. He’s older than most of the books in there,” she jokes pushing the start button of her Tesla. “I’m surprised he was still there; he normally goes home early every day.”

Damn it why didn’t I just say I couldn’t find him and had to get the book myself which is why it took me so long.

“You look a little pale. Are you feeling all right?” she asks concerned.

“Just thirsty is all.”

She reaches blindly behind her for her backpack that sits on the back seat. “I got you,” she says setting her bag on my knee.

“There’s an unopened bottle in there that I got at the vending machine earlier.”

“You’re a life saver,” I tell her, pulling out the bottle and draining half of it in the first gulp.

“You still okay to go to mine to study?”

“Will anyone be home?” I ask. But what I really want to know is will Saint and his friends be there. My nerves couldn’t take a repeat of what just happened.

“Nope, house all to ourselves. Eric is away for a day or two on business, and my mom is busy with her wedding planner. Saint is wherever the hell Saint goes every day after school. He rarely comes straight home and stays out until late so, it’s just you and me.”
