Page 83 of His to Ruin

“Well for some. Wonder what her parents do for a living, plus I could use some tips on decorating.”

I swallow a gulp.

“Maybe they won the lottery or something.”

“Hum, that reminds me I haven’t done it yet for tonight,” she says standing from my bed smoothing down her clothes.

“Money can’t buy everything,” I tell her.

Her brows lower..

“You’re right, it can’t. If only money had the power to make all your problems disappear, but unfortunately the world doesn’t work that way,” she says sadly. Walking back over to me she cups my face placing a gentle kiss to my forehead.

“Have fun tonight sweetheart. And if you’re staying with Lexy I would appreciate a text to let me know you’re okay?”

“I will I promise.”

I wish Millie was still awake to see me in my dress but she was too worn out to stay awake after mom took her to one of her school friends birthday party at some big play centre.

Tiptoeing into her room I pull her covers up to her chin the way she likes it. “Snug as a bug in a rug,” I whisper kissing her soft cheek.

Leaning over to her bedside table I spot the jewelry box I gave her. Its half open with something sparkling in the light so much that it catches my eye. Walking over to it I lift open the box only to find the necklace I gave her inside. I lift the heavy necklace noticing how the blood red rubies in the rose is a perfect match to the dress I’m wearing.

Decision made I put the necklace on. It’s heavy and cold against my skin.

I’m about to close her bedroom door when I hear her whisper, “You look like a princess. Remember when the clock strikes twelve to come home otherwise a handsome prince might take you away.”

My heart pangs in my chest. I want to tell her the truth that there is no such thing as princes, only devils who twist your heart. Instead, I say, “I will, I promise. Night sweet girl. Love you.” I finish blowing her a little kiss. She reaches out catching thin air then tucks her little hand back into her comforter just as the Uber beeps outside announcing its arrival.

It’s not long before we pull up into Lexy’s house. Twinkling lights and candles line the driveway and the beautifully landscaped grounds.

“Name please?” a tall broad man in a black suit with a clipboard asks when we pull up to the gates. After telling him my name he waves us in. I’m thankful that I’m just getting dropped off because there’s cars everywhere. Parking must be a nightmare for the three valets. They will earn every penny tonight that’s for sure.

A young woman in a black suit around her mid-twenties opens the front door in greeting. Soft music can be heard in the background along with chatter from the crowds inside the marquee.

“Good evening miss. The party is taking place in the gardens, but first if you wouldn’t mind following me over here to run through security before you go in.”

“Security?”

“It will only take a minute,”

She smiles gesturing for me to walk over to four men standing next to what looks like a body scanner and a conveyer belt that connects to a mini scanner like the ones you would see at an airport.

“Place your purse in the holder,” a burly man with a ginger beard instructs in a voice that sounds like he smoked one too many cigarettes holding out a plastic container for me to place my clutch bag into.

After placing it in the container I look to the other man standing behind the scanner.

He motions me to step forward with two fingers.

I hold my breath awkwardly walking through as if expecting an alarm to go to go off any minute. Relief instantly floods me when the light turns green but it doesn’t end there.

Once satisfied there’s nothing in my bag he holds a freaking metal detector up in his hand asking me to turn around so he can scan my body.

I begin to sweat.

“What exactly are you looking for?” I ask in an attempt to ease some of the tension.

“This will detect any weapons you maybe concealing.”
