“And spoil the surprise,” he says hugging me back.

“Come here you,” he tells Millie pulling her into his side to join in on our hug.

“My goodness look how big you’ve grown already and it’s only been a few weeks. Your almost at my elbow,” he tells her proudly.

“Almost,” she says smiling up at him. “Look daddy my tooth fell out.” She shows him the new gap in her gum. “Mommy says the tooth fairy will come tonight and leave money under my pillow because it’s nice and clean. Do you think a fairy will come daddy?” her eyes sparkling in wonder.

Bending down to inspect the tooth in her open palm he says, “oh yes, I see what mommy means. You should get a good reward for how clean that tooth is. You must be brushing night and day for it to be that sparkly.”

“How did you guess daddy?”

“I can just tell,” he says giving me a cool wink. “Jordin used to brush her teeth like that as well didn’t you honey? Now look at that beautiful smile,” he beams pinching my cheek.

Sure dad and I suppose the braces I had to wear for a year in junior high had nothing to do with it. I want to say, but I don’t.

I spend the rest of the weekend with my family, eating take away food and watching Millie’s favourite Disney movies. Dad even met Lexy when she stopped by yesterday to collect her things, but I didn’t get a chance to speak to her properly until now.

The familiar beep of her car outside lets me know she’s here.

“Bye,” I shout out to no one in particular.

“Where you off to?” dad asks coming out of his study with a coffee cup in hand.

“School,” I remind him shouldering my backpack.

“Where’s mom?”

“Mom hasn’t taken me since my first week. Lexy drives me.”

“Oh,right. The girl with the blond hair. Sorry, didn’t know as all.”

I walk up to him planting a kiss on his cheek.

“Well if you would hurry up and find my birth certificate so I can get my driver’s licence then I wouldn’t need to rely on other people.”

“Yeah, yeah, go on and don’t keep the girl waiting. Have a good day in school honey,” he says as his phone rings in his pocket. He lifts it staring at the name on the screen like he’s seen a ghost.

“Dad. Who is it?”

“No one,” he grunts shoving it back in his pocket not answering.

His tone is clipped when he tells me to go otherwise I’ll make us be late. Maybe it was a client and he didn’t want me overhearing? Wouldn’t be the first time.

“Say bye to mom and Millie for me?”

“Will do. Drive safe and come straight home after you hear me?” he calls out ignoring Lexy who’s waving at him from her car.

That’s weird. Why is he being so rude.

“I hear ya dad. See you later.”

Lexy’s still waving when I get into the car.

“You’ve been holding back on me Jordin,” she scolds sternly making my heart skip a beat. Does she know what happened over the weekend with Caleb? Fuck I didn’t want to her find out from anyone but me.

“You could have told me your dad was a silver foxed DILF,” she says, “I would have at least worn makeup when I first saw him.”

“Stop,” I whine batting her arm. “Your going to make me hurl up my breakfast.”
