“Agreed. No one will ever hurt the women we love ever again. I’ll make sure of it. People will learn what it’s like to fear our names.”

“Damn fucking right they will,” he says, his exhaustion evident by his heavy eyelids.

“I’ll speak with my dad first thing in the morning. Why don’t you try and get some sleep?” I tell him, knowing he wants the same thing I do.To crawl into bed next to the woman he loves and hold her tight.

Colton comes back into the room looking paler than when he left.

“I feel like I’ve had the life sucked out of me. Don’t get me wrong, normally, I’d be up for anything, especially for a nurse in uniform, but fuck me. Amanda was like a fucking vampire.”

My lips tip up in a half smile, looking at him thoughtfully. “I owe you for this. I mean that. Thank you.”

“I did it for Lexy, not you. The poor girl has been through enough already, and now this…” He plops down on the seat next to Caleb, gesturing for him to pass the whisky. “How is she? Is there any news?”

Yawning, I scrub a hand down my face. “Julia is still in with her. We’ll help her through this. I don’t want her out of our sight from now on.”

“Yeah? And who are we to her, huh? We’re not her friends. You certainly aren’t. I know that for damn sure. So don’t paint it out like you are,” he bites.

Where the fuck did that just come from?

My face falls into a dark scowl, my hand clenching into a tight fist as every muscle in my body begins to tense up. I’m about to rip his goddamn head off when I remind myself that he doesn’t know what’s been happening between us these past few weeks.

“Things change,” I tell him sternly.

Colton shifts in his seat, moving his head side to side vigorously in disagreement. “They sure as fuck changed pretty damn fast, didn’t they, Saint. Especially when it involves your best friend’s girl.”

Jumping out of my seat, my lips curl in a snarl, getting right in his face. Colton stands unflinching as Caleb rushes between us, knowing that once the first punch is thrown, we’ll likely kill each other.

“You don’t know what the fuck you’re talking about,” I snarl through gritted teeth, reaching across Caleb to grab a fist full of his dirty shirt that still reeks of smoke. Caleb attempts to push me back, but I’m too caught up in my rage, like a fucking bull in an arena, ready to crush anyone who gets in my way.

“Ah yeah? Cause from where I was standing, you didn’t seem to put up too much of a fight,” Colton yells before turning his attention to Caleb. “And how the fuck are you so calm about this? If it were my best friend trying to take my girl away from me, he’d be first in line to see Julia.”

He’s going too far, and I’m seconds away from knocking his teeth down his throat at his accusations that I had something to do with that shit.

“Because I spoke with Jordin, Colton. It’s true. They didn’t know,” Caleb says calmly.

“Ian and my dad had me by the fucking balls, Colton. What the hell was I supposed to do, huh? Refuse in front of everyone? Spill out my guts that I’ve been fucking my stepsister and that Jordin is in love with my best friend and get us all killed?”

“Keep your voices down. Someone might overhear,” Caleb says slowly, reminding us that we are not alone in this house—there are eyes and ears everywhere.

I walk away in an attempt to calm myself down. The last thing Julia needs is to be called away from Lexy to sort out a blood bath in this room.

“Don’t fucking start with me, Colton. You know what happened tonight was as much a surprise to me as it was to anyone else in that room. I was no more privy to it than Jordin was.”

“So what? You’re just going to let them get away with this? Let them marry you and Jordin off to one another when you’re both in love with other people?”

“Over my fucking dead body,” Caleb argues.

“Trust me. That’s never going to happen. But it’s not like I got the opportunity to ask them what their game was when people were shooting at us, you fucking idiot.”

Colton storms toward me with fire blazing in his brown eyes. I stand my ground.

“What did you just call me?”

We square up to one another. “You heard me.”

Once again, Caleb steps in between us.

“That’s enough. This isn’t the time to be arguing amongst ourselves. What we need to do is focus on finding out who tried to wipe us off the face of the fucking earth and why. And you.” Caleb turns, pointing a finger in my face. “You need to speak to your dad and tell him that whatever fucked up deal or plan he’s hatched with Ian is over. Jordin is mine. Anyone who tries to take her away from me will end up in a shallow grave. Who that person may be is of no consequence to me.”
