“I don’t know, man. Sooner or later, the truth would come out. It always does.”

“A piece of paper won’t change anything for me,” I reiterate.

His eyes shine like he’s just had an epiphany.

“What if Eric finds out she isn’t a virgin? Would he call it off then?”

“He already knows,” I admit.

“What the fuck do you mean he knows?” he demands urgently. “And more to the point, why the fuck hasn’t she told me he knows?”

“I didn’t ask for details, but Ian must have got it from her somehow. Apparently, as a way of compensation, Ian offered Eric a piece of his construction company. More than half of our men will be employed in no-show jobs. All receive a salary and are provided with union and healthcare benefits, while Ian rakes in his own benefits. The bigger the workforce, the less taxes he pays, not to mention the money he launders through it.”

“Sneaky bastard.” He stops to think for a second. “How long have you known about this?”

“Not long. I was going to tell you then all this shit with finding Mica happened. Truth be told, I’d forgotten all about it.”

“And what about Max? Does Ian know about him?”

I nod. “Yeah. He’s dead.”

“How do you know that?”

“Because I do. Count yourself lucky Max didn’t give up your name when they found him and told them about you. I know you paid him a visit.”

“How do you know he’s dead? Shit. He might have given them my description. Your dad would be able to know it’s me from a mile away.” He says, further cursing out his stupidity that he never wore a mask.

My eyes flit to the club door, then back to Caleb.

“Ian put a hit out on him. That’s how I know he’s dead. And as a goodwill gesture, my dad sent Chains to do it. If Max gave him your description, he never let on.”

He runs a hand through his hair, blowing out a frustrated sigh.

“FUCK!”

“Yeah, fuck.”

“Jordin and I had a huge row yesterday,” he says, changing the subject away from Max. “And now she won’t answer my calls or texts. I think I might have really messed things up with her.”

“She’ll be fine.” I grab his chin playfully to lighten the thick tension in the car. “Who could resist that face.”

“Fuck off,” he scolds playfully. Several beats pass before he speaks again. “What about you and Lexy?”

Looking off into the distance, I shake my head.

“You’ve never been like this about any girl before. You really do care about her, don’t you?”

“Probably the same way you feel about Jordin.”

“Still, it doesn’t change what’s happening between you and Jordin. It won’t stop the wedding. Jordin is to be your wife, Saint.”

“There’s absolutely nothing between us, nor will there be with any other woman while Lexy walks this earth. She’s it for me.”

“Yeah, always in the shadows, though, never to be seen together in the light of day. I don’t think I can live like that, and neither could the girls.”

“Not even if it means you still get to have her?”

“How can I have her if I leave her in your bed every night? We have spies everywhere, Saint. They watch our every single move. This would never work.”
