“To Jordin and Saint,” the table repeats, clinking their glasses high around me in a celebratory toast.

I smile sympathetically over at Jordin, who looks ready to burst into tears at any moment.

“Why are we celebrating Jordin and Saint?” A confused Christy asks Lucas, who doesn’t answer her question. He didn’t tell her why we were here. Why did he even bring her?

Just then, the dining room door opens, and rows of people hold trays of food that smell divine.

“This looks amazing, Kelly,” the curly-haired lady praises.

“That’s very kind of you to say, Christine. As much as I would love to say I can cook like this, I can’t take credit. That’s all down to Mrs. Watson, our housekeeper. She’s quite amazing. I’d be lost without her.”

“Looks delicious,” Ian agrees.

“Dig in, everyone,” my mom encourages before conversing with Ian about plans for the big day while our plates are being filled.

My appetite is long gone, but I take a few bites to remain polite.

“You’re not eating much, darling,” my mom remarks in front of everyone.

“I had a big lunch,” I lied. Truth is, after the few nibbles of chicken, I felt like I was going to throw up.

“So, Christy, how long have you and Lucas been dating?” my mom asks.

My eyes scan to Jordin, who smiles wickedly.

“We’re just friends,” Lucas corrects, slumping back in his seat. Christy looks shocked by his admission.

“Christy’s friends with a lot of the boys from our school. Isn’t that right, Christy?” I remark, making Colton almost choke with laughter into his glass.

If Christy’s looks could kill, I’d be dead. This is my playground now bitch.

“Hard to avoid when you’re as popular as I am, but you wouldn’t know anything about that,” she retorts.

“True. I’m nowhere near as popular as you. Then again, I like to make lifelong friends. Not nighttime acquaintances.”

Christy glares at me across the table, and the room falls silent.

Trying to avoid further tension, my mom clears her throat, sending a scathing look my way to tell me to stop.

I couldn’t care less. Christy has no right to be in my home, sitting at my dinner table. My mom can give me an ear-bashing all she wants after this. It’s worth it.

Changing the subject, my mom turns to Jordin.

“And how have you settled in with school, Jordin?” my mom asks. “It must have been a difficult move since it was your senior year.”

“It was, but then I met your amazing daughter,” Jordin tells her, and I smile at my best friend.

“I’m going to miss her so much next week when she goes away,” Jordin says playfully.

Let our plan commence.

“Going away?” my mom asks, turning to me with a confused look in her eyes.

Jordin continues, “I know, it’s such a pity I can’t come with her next week. I’m so sad I’m going to miss out on this amazing opportunity, and there is a bridal store there that looks amazing online,” she smiles sadly to my mom.

That’s it, bestie. Lay it on thick.

My mom’s eyes flutter between Jordin’s and mine, “Oh. What opportunity is this, darling? Where are you going?”
