“Mine.” He kisses the top of my head, holding me close.

“A Thorn will always protect the rose from their enemies, even when the petals begin to fall. Side by side, we build our foundation strong, weathering any storm that comes our way. I didn’t choose Jordin, Angel. I chose you. You’re my rose. My everything.” He stops for a second, rubbing his fingers over the rose on my bracelet. “I love you, Lexy. I’ve loved you for the longest time. I knew it deep down. It just took me a while to realize it.”

I turn my face toward him, eyes welling with tears. He cups my chin, lowering his lips to mine.

“I swear on my life I will never, ever let you down again.”

My heart swells, feeling like it’s about to burst out from my chest. “Saint,” I whisper.

He catches a tear with his thumb. “I’m sorry.”

His kiss is slow and full of passion, making my toes curl. To my disappointment, he pulls back too soon, breaking our kiss.

We stare at each other for what feels like the longest time, and I’m about to bare my soul to him, telling him that I love him back, when a feeling I don’t like washes over me.

“There’s something else I need to tell you.”

Worried, I pull away from him.

“My dad’s dead.”

Chapter Thirty-Nine

“Mydad’sdead.”

The words hang in the air, devoid of any emotion. I stare at him, trying to comprehend the gravity of what he just said.

“What do you mean he’s dead? He can’t be. He’s in prison, Saint.”

“Trust me. He’s very dead. The police will be here first thing in the morning, if not before, to let your mom and me know.”

My disbelief morphs into confusion. “How exactly is it that you know this?”

“Because I was the one who had him killed.”

I recoil, pulling away from him, bewildered at what I hear from his mouth.

“I’m going to tell you something you can never repeat to anyone. Not to Jordin, not to your mom, not to anyone.”

I’m left speechless, wondering why he’s confiding in me. “Why are you telling me this?”

“Because I promised that I would never lie to you again. It’s a promise I intend never to break.”

“I don’t understand.” Then the realization hits me like a fucking freight train. Saint murdered his father. He’s going to go to jail for the rest of his life.

“Oh god,” I mutter, feeling a wave of nausea. “They’re coming to take you away, aren’t they? That’s why you told me you loved me. Why you gave me this bracelet. You’re leaving me.”

Saint sits up straighter. “No, Angel. I’m not going anywhere. I’m never leaving you alone again.”

“But you killed him, Saint. You broke the law. The police aren’t stupid. They’ll find out it was you.”

“He was still alive when I left the prison. The guards will verify that. My father had many enemies. As far as anyone is concerned, a fellow inmate killed Eric Garo after a fight broke out.”

My head swims with confusion. “I don’t understand. Do you mean to tell me that someone else killed Eric, but you were there and let them do it?”

“That’s exactly what I’m saying. I gave the order.”

My body jumps off the bed, taking the sheet with me to cover my nakedness, terror skating down my spine at his coldness towards what has happened. “Why?” I blurt out, my voice trembling with fear and disbelief. “Why would you do this? This is beyond messed up, Saint, even for you.” My hands shake, and the room seems to tighten around me. “And my mom. This is going to destroy her. Did you even stop to think about that?”
