He shifts closer to me, and I don’t stop him this time.

“Caleb and I will run everything together, fifty-fifty, just like we always said. Our businesses will be legitimized, but I won’t lie to your face and tell you it will be smooth sailing. A lot of people are going to be upset by the changes we need to make. There will be times when we need to get our hands dirty.”

“As in hurting people?” I venture, my voice barely above a whisper.

“If I need to, then yes.”

He continues, “Our security will also be tripled at all times.”

“Does that mean more men around the house?”

“Yes. Why? Has someone spoken out of line or touched you?” The protective edge in Saint’s voice adds a layer of anger.

“No. No. Nothing like that.”

“Then what is it?”

“It’s Owl. And before you go off on the deep end, he hasn’t said or done anything to me. He just makes me feel a little uncomfortable, is all. I don’t like him being around the house so much.” My words hang in the air, a hesitant admission.

“Then Owl won’t be in this house again. Simple as that.”

“He can still come. Just maybe not so much when I’m around if that’s okay.”

“If Owl makes you uncomfortable, then Owl won’t be there, full stop. End of story.”

I know not to argue. Saint’s as stubborn as I am. Once he’s made up his mind, there is no changing it, and his mind is made up as far as Owl is concerned, so I move on.

“You mentioned Caleb, but what about Colton? Where does he fit into all this?”

“We need someone we can fully trust, and Colton’s agreed to be underboss. He’s going to bridge the gap between our businesses with Marcus and take over certain activities we can no longer be seen being a part of. It’s what he wanted. Something we all agreed on.”

“He needs a family, Saint. To feel like he truly belongs.”

“That’s what we are. So that’s what we’ll give him. If we do this, then the four of us need to stand united. We can’t have any suspicions raised until Marcus gets out, which could take time.”

“You mean the five of us?”

He shakes his head. “Jordin can’t know about this, Lexy. I mean it.”

“I have to tell her. She’s distraught with what’s happening to her and Caleb. I won’t lie to my best friend.”

“I’m sorry, Angel. The answer is no.”

“But Saint…”

“It’s not negotiable. If Jordin found out now about what Ian did to her mom and her uncle, she’d go nuclear. That’s something I can’t have right now, and Caleb agrees. You tell her now, and this all blows apart.”

I lean against the headboard, yawning, my eyes growing heavy with sleep. “Then at least tell Caleb to stop acting like a dick towards her. He hasn’t been the same with her since this whole thing began. She needs assurance that he still loves and wants to be with her.”

“I think she’s worrying over nothing. He’s there right now, probably fucking her worries away as we speak.”

My head shakes with disagreement. “I don’t think she is worrying over nothing. She told me he’s been blowing hot and cold with her since the engagement.”

“Trust me, Angel. He’s blowing hot now. You don’t need to worry about the two of them.” Saint’s conviction slices through the room, leaving me with unanswered questions and a headache from exhaustion.

“What about my mother? Eric was still her husband. She’s going to be devastated, Saint. The funeral will bring back all sorts of memories.”

“There isn’t going to be a funeral. He’s going to be cremated, and his ashes thrown in the trash where he belongs.”
