“Why are you brooding, Nix? Your human grow tired of you?”

His brother came back to himself, shot her a glare, and took a sip of his drink.

She chuckled.

“For the record, Nixus,” Lexa said, grabbing her flute of champagne and flopping into an overstuffed chair near a dark window, “I like Auri.”

“She hasn’t grown tired of me.”

“She will. And I will be waiting.” Lexa licked her lips and grinned.

Nix groaned, rolling his eyes and pressing his hand to his pale forehead as he shook his head. “Why are you like this?”

She snorted. “I’m like this because I enjoy being like this.” She shrugged. “And, better you learn this now—women need more than a man is able to give them.”

“Fair enough. But I am no man,” he said with a glint of his usual arrogance, but it slid away as quickly as it had surfaced.

“We might have found something.” Luc set his tumbler on the table. “A name, but it isn’t in any of our records.”

“With the Oracles?”

“Right. Auri and her family are most likely godblood.”

“Makes sense considering the yoke,” she said with a grimace. “Have you checked with Father?” Her eyes darted between Luc and Nix.

“He won’t intervene. Mortals, unless we can prove otherwise. We need to find this piece of the puzzle to prove it.”

“Ask him for your powers back.”

Luc shook his head. “You know he’s exacted a price.”

“Of course he has.” Lexa took a sip, then smoothed a perfectly manicured hand over the satin of her black pants. “You should acquiesce.”

“I can’t.”

Lexa’s concerned gaze jumped to Nixus, and she arched her eyebrows. “What if it could save your brother?”

“And what gives you the impression my power—Father’s power—would make any difference? It won’t impact the yoke.”

She shrugged. “Who knows what this spell requires, but what if your powers could break the spell?”

“Yours can’t. Nix’s can’t. It’s unlikely. Besides, I can’t agree to his demands.”

“Which are what? Taking his place?”

His silence was affirmation enough.

Her eyebrows arched, and she smirked. “I don’t envy the position.” She took a sip, then pointed her champagne flute at him. “But, Father’s powers as god of the Vasmost probably comes with some omnipotent perks.”

“You denied him.”

Her smirk deepened. “I can’t be trusted with power like that. Besides, I was always his second choice.” She gave him one of those looks he hated.

“That isn’t why we’re here,” Luc said. “We have two options. The human link and–”

“–the magic,” Nix finished. “Irrational magic.” He drained the rest of his drink. “We wondered if you might be able to help.”

Lexa nodded at his whiskey. “Feel like getting drunk? I can take you somewhere where you can drink yourself into true oblivion while pursuing your investigation.” She arched an eyebrow.
