Felina rolled out of the bed, landing on her hands and knees on the opposite side of the bed from the exterior door.

The doorknob jiggled again.

She reached for her cell phone, pulling it from the charger on her nightstand. When she opened the screen, it came up with Lucas’s contact page.

Without pausing to think, she called his number.

He answered on the first ring.“Missing me already?”

“Tell me you’re outside my apartment door, testing my lock,” she whispered.“Because if it’s not you, someone is trying to get into my apartment.”

Chapter4

“Fuck,”Lucas muttered.“I’m on my way.Stay on the phone.”He’d just come out of a cold shower and dried off when his phone had buzzed. When he’d seen Felina’s name flash across the screen, he’d smiled. If he wasn’t mistaken, she’d been as affected by their kissing as he’d been.

He'd answered quickly before she could change her mind about calling him.

Her frightened voice had thrown the equivalent of a bucket of ice onto his libido.

Lucas put the cell phone on speaker while he dragged on jeans and his boots. He grabbed a T-shirt and his gun and ran out the door of his room in the Bayou Brotherhood Boarding House, where most of his teammates resided. It had been their home since they’d arrived and until they could secure alternate accommodations.

“I’m scared,” Felina said.

“Where are your keys?”Lucas asked as he jumped up into his truck.

“In my purse, hanging on a chair in the kitchenette.”

“Does your car have an emergency button on the key fob?”

“I don’t know,” she answered.

“Can you get to your keys?”He spun out of the boarding house parking lot and gunned the accelerator.

“I think so,” she said.

He could hear shuffling.

“Got them, and yes, there’s a red button with a horn on it.”

“Hit that button.Your horn will blare and draw attention to anyone around. That should scare the intruder away.”

“The horn’s blaring,” she reported.

“Is he still working the doorknob?”

A loud crash sounded, and Felina’s muffled squeal made Lucas’s blood run cold.“What happened?”Lucas took a corner without slowing. The bed of his truck skidded sideways, fishtailing until he regained control.

“Shit, shit, shit,” Felina’s voice shook.“He broke the door jam and is kicking away the panels.”

“I’m two minutes away. Can you get out the other door?”

“Heading that way now.”A clunking sound was followed by a muttered curse and a door slamming.

“Felina!”

Muffled crashes sounded on the line.

“Felina!”He had almost reached Main Street when bright red and white lights flashed behind him, and a siren blared.
