Then the woman in green appeared to hug the man, then stepped away, disappearing into the crowd.

Mr.Crabtree stood for a moment, his eyes wide, his mouth forming an O.Then he sank into the sea of faces.

“Oh, sweet Jesus.”Felina stiffened beside Lucas.“What’s the date on that video? Is there a date?”Her face was pale, her gaze pinned to the screen that had frozen on the last image of the crowd sans Crabtree.

“February third of this year,” Landry said.

“What day was Thomas Crabtree murdered?”Lucas asked.“Can you look it up?”

Landry opened another window on the screen and keyed inThomas Crabtree murder.

Several articles mentioned the murder.Landry clicked on one.“He was killed on February third of this year,”

Felina met Lucas’s gaze.“This video is of Thomas Crabtree’s murder.”

Chapter9

“Play it again,”Remy said.“This time, slow it down.”

Landry started the video from the beginning and set the speed to half of normal.

Felina focused on the women in the masks.

“There are so many people packing the streets.I don’t know how Gaither managed to get these shots,” Lucas said.

“He had to be standing on something,” Remy commented.

The blue-masked woman said something to Crabtree that made his brow furrow. He shook his head and gripped the woman’s arm.

She leaned close, brushed a kiss across Crabtree’s cheek and pulled loose of the man’s grip.

When he reached for her again, she held up a hand.People bumped into her, surging toward the street to get a closer look at the floats.

Crabtree seemed to be calling out to her.

She shook her head and moved through the throng of parade watchers until she disappeared out of the camera’s range.

“Pause the video,” Remy said.

Landry hit the pause button.

“Could you note any distinguishable features for the blue woman?”Remy asked.“Any scars, tattoos, eye color?”

“The mask covered her face,” Lucas said.“Pale skin. She was almost as tall as Crabtree, though, based on the people around him, he didn’t stand out as taller than most.I’d put him at under six feet tall.Maybe five-foot-ten-ish.The woman was a few inches shorter but average to tall for a female.”

“She had long, brown hair and a pointy chin,” Felina added.“I didn’t see any tattoos, and I couldn’t see enough of her eyes to tell the color. But, given her brown hair, she probably had dark eyes.”

Remy nodded.“Play.”

Landry pressed the play button, and the video continued slowly.

Crabtree craned his neck as if searching the crowd for the blue-masked woman. The woman dressed in the green sequined gown and flamboyant green feathered mask came up behind him, insinuating herself through the crowd.

As she neared Crabtree, she placed a hand on his shoulder.

Felina studied the hand and arm, searching for tattoos or scars, neither of which were evident. But she wore an emerald ring on her middle finger that matched her green dress and mask.It was a big square stone set in gold with sparkling diamonds on either side.

Her back was to the camera.
