Lucas took the box of food from her.

On the fifth ring, Felina finally pulled her phone out and stared down at the screen.“It’s Trish.”

“Answer it,” he said. The moment was already past.

Felina hit the receive button and held the phone to her ear.“Hey, Trish.”

Her friend spoke fast.

Felina frowned.“Hey, slow down.What?Why?No.Don’t do anything until we’ve had a chance to talk.”She nodded.“No, I’m not doing anything.I’ll be right there.”She ended the call and looked up at Lucas.“I have to go.Trish is upset about something and wants to call off the wedding.I told her not to make any decisions until we had a chance to talk.I have to go.”She grimaced.“Can I get a raincheck on the third dessert?”

Lucas smiled.“Always.”He hooked her arm and steered her toward her shop.“Come on, I’ll take you there in my truck.”

“You don’t have to.I can drive my car.”

He shook his head.“I’m still your fake boyfriend until the wedding.”

She frowned.“There might not be a wedding.Trish was pretty upset.”

“I’m sure after you talk with her, all will be well, and the wedding will go off without a hitch,” he said.

They arrived at the shop and went straight to his truck.

“What if it isn’t Trish wanting to call it off?”Felina said.“What if Marty changed his mind?”

Lucas paused before he opened the door for her.“It’s possible.”He tipped his head.“He could’ve realized what a fool he was for walking away from you.As we speak, he might be on his way here to beg you to take him back.”

Felina stared up at him, a frown denting her brow.“You think he’d do that?”

Lucas prayed he was wrong.“He could be coming to his senses. Now, if it had been me, I never would’ve left you.”He pulled open the truck door.“We could stay here and see if he shows up.”

Felina snorted.“Even if he did show up, begging me to come back to him, he’d be wasting his time.He did us both a favor by walking out on me.”She climbed into the truck.“I don’t love Marty.I don’t think I ever did.”

Lucas fought back a grin.“How do you know?”

She grinned.“When you know you’re not in love...you know.”

He closed the door and rounded the truck, a smile spreading across his face.At least she knew she didn’t love her ex-boyfriend.Now, all she had to do was realize that she loved him.

That might take a bit.She had a huge number of orders to deliver for Colonial Day and a wedding to do.Until those were behind her, she wouldn’t have time to think, much less listen to her heart.

Lucas would have to be patient and make himself indispensable. He could do that.

Felina was worth it.

Chapter11

Lucas pulledup in front of the little cottage Trish rented on the edge of town, shifted into park and started to get out of the truck.

Felina laid a hand on his arm.“I’m sure Trish isn’t going to want to spill her guts with you looking over my shoulder.”

“I’m only going to walk you to the door.I won’t go in with you,” Lucas said.“I just want to make sure you’re safe. Then I’ll wait in the truck.”

Felina shook her head before he finished speaking.“If you’re hanging around, she might feel like I’d rather be somewhere else.”Which was true.Felina would rather be back at her apartment partaking of dessert number three.

“Fine,” he said.“I’ll pretend to leave, drive around the block and park out of her sight. But I’m not leaving you anywhere. We still don’t know who broke into your apartment. He might be watching you, waiting for me to leave you alone so he can swoop in.”

“Okay, okay.I get the picture.I’m convinced. And yes, I don’t want you too far away, especially considering there’s a murderer out there somewhere.Gaither knew her and probably died because of that knowledge.I just need a little time alone with Trish. She was very upset.”
