“I’m swearing you to secrecy.”

She put her pen and notepad down. “You can trust me.”

“I need to help Tessie process something, but you can’t add this to your report. She’s just a kid.”

Jenn’s brows drew together, her concern genuine. “Yeah, of course. What happened?”

For a moment, it felt like us again. Jenn and Ari. Old friends. Nothing between us.

“Tessie’s uncle is missing, and she isn’t taking it well. She’s confused.”

“Her uncle is missing…”

“Vincent Romano,” I relented.

The look on her face said it all. Telling her this was a bad idea. I tried to back-track.

“It’s no big deal,” I offered. “He’s probably in Atlantic City gambling away more money than Nicaragua’s GDP.”

“Ariana,” she said my name slowly, drawing each syllable out. “You do understand that I need to note this in my report, right?”

I shot off of the couch. “You’re my best friend and handler. You can make the decision not to.”

She took in my stance and curled fists at each side of my body. “Fine. I won’t. Promise.”

This.

This was how it felt to not trust someone.
