I press a kiss to her temple. “Surprise me.”
“My mother’s name. It means fate.” She writes something down, then hands it to me. “Our daughter is going to hate us for giving her a boy’s middle name.”
“It’ll be fun. Think of all the teasing she’ll get to blame on us.”
Ari rolls her eyes as I take in the name and realize how blessed I am.

This daughter.
This life.
It’s all ours.

Fifteen years.
The minimum sentence for murder.
Zero—the time I’ll spend behind bars, thanks to my army of well-funded lawyers.
“Or,” my brother-in-law suggests, “you could, perhaps, not kill someone. Radical idea, right?”
Easy for Damian to say. Whereas mine drew men in, his wife scared them away. He didn’t need to lift a finger. The Vitali last name did all the work for him.
I set my whiskey down on the booth table. “Laws are loose guidelines, anyway.”
“It’s a miracle you’ve spent the past thirty-six years without a single day behind bars.”
I remain silent, deciding not to bring up the one time Ari found her old pair of cuffs. I spent an entire weekend locked up, but not (technically) behind bars. Semantics.
Addicted to work, she insists on manning L’Oscurita five nights a week, which means I’m also here five nights a week, making sure some fucker doesn’t lay hands on my wife.
My wife makes fleeting eye contact with me and grins, knowing I have a front-row seat to some asshat in a suit hitting on her.
And that’s my cue.
