The tickling continues and I see Felicity’s hand up by the side of my head. She’s twirling her fingers through my hair and brushing the side of her hand against my ear. Her eyes are closed so she must be asleep.

It’s now night, but my vision allows me to see her face. I study every millimetre of it, starting with her eyes. I can see tiny veins running across her closed eyelids which have minuscule hairs lining the edge of them that are resting on the skin below.

I follow the straight line of her nose which like Vysarians, sticks out further than my species, then continue my exploration down to her lips, which are partly slightly and are emitting small breaths of warm air being expelled from her lungs.

Leaning my face closer to hers, I inhale her breath. I want to know what she smells like internally. Not because of my hunger, but because I am curious to see if her species smell like Vysarians.

Her breath is sweet. I linger in it, inhaling it into my own lungs.

Suddenly her eyes spring open and roam over my face, although I’m not sure if she can see me as her pupils don’t appear to be fixed on me.

“What the hell are you doing? Are you sniffing me to see if I’m good enough to eat?”

“I should be asking you the same thing. Why are your fingers curled around my hair?”

She tries to pull away her hand, but my hair gets caught on something on her finger. It tugs my head down.

“Shit. Sorry. It’s my ring. Your hair is stuck in it.” I growl. Not from pain, but from annoyance. She does her best to detangle it, but it’s no use. “Damn it. I’m going to have to take my ring off and leave it stuck in your hair until daylight, until I can see what I’m doing.”

“Very well.” She pulls her finger out of the band, and it dangles just below my ear. I watch Felicity’s face contort with a mix of emotions, before she opens her mouth to speak. But I hear a squeal come from the direction of the first trap Felicity laid down and put my hand across her mouth. “Shhhh. I think I can hear something,” Her eyes stretch wide open. “It sounds like one of the traps has been successful.” I can feel her face pulling into a smile beneath my hand. I think she likes this news.

Dropping my hand, I make a move to get up. It’s an effort, more so than yesterday, and I can hear myself grunting like a weakling. I’m ashamed of myself for appearing so weak in front of Felicity, Badligons are a master race, but even if I have to crawl on my hands and knees to get to the traps, I will do anything to survive now I have found a female. With my clan’s new laws to eat females, she will need my protection to find her friends.

I roll over the edge of the hollow, and drop my feet down onto the ground, but they buckle beneath me, and I have to dig my claws into the tree trunk and grip tightly to stop myself from crumbling into a pile.

“Wait. I-I'll help you.”

There is no denying the fear lacing Felicity’s words, and after sleeping side-by-side with her for hours and not laying a finger on her, my gut tightens with disappointment. “No it’s okay. I’ll find the traps myself. It’s better if you don’t see me eat anyway.”

“I won’t be able to see you eat. It’s pitch black, but at least I can be a crutch for you.”

Before I can protest, she’s climbing out of the tree hollow. I watch her clearly with vision adapted to hunt at night and wonder if I should confess how well I can see in the dark. I decide to keep quiet; it might be a distraction she could do without.

Her hands find me, and feel across my chest until one arm slides around my waist. My cock stirs at her touch and I have to stifle a groan. It’s been so long since I’ve felt the stirring of desire. Until now, the female has been more a curiosity. I’m amazed that I can have such feelings for a species other than my own.

My arm goes around her shoulders and I lean onto them. They are half the size of mine, and I’m surprised and relieved when she doesn’t buckle beneath my weight. “Thank you.”

“Just remember this when you’re strong again but your belly is empty. I’m handy to keep around.”

A noise rumbles up from my chest and throat and escapes my lips. I’m shocked to hear a chuckle coming from my own mouth.

She tries to steer me in the wrong direction. “Come on, I think the trap is this way.”

“No it’s this way.” I pull her with the last of my strength in the right direction.

“How do you know?”

“I can smell blood.”

I feel her tremble slightly beneath me, but my words don’t deter her, and she helps me stumble slowly forward.

The distance is so short, yet I feel as though I am walking the circumference of Planet Vysaria. My feet feel as heavy as boulders, and it takes an enormous amount of effort to lift one foot in front of the other. Felicity matches my pants, breath-for-breath. This is just as physical for her as it is for me. There is heat between our connecting bodies, and for me, a shared closeness I have not had with another before.

The smell of blood on the air mixed with Felicity’s scent is a heady mix, and I can feel my heart quickening and my claws extending out further, readying to tear the prey’s flesh apart. But a new fear begins to form in my stomach—what if I go into a frenzy? Will Felicity be safe around me?

The closer we get, the bigger and tighter the knot forming in my stomach becomes. Just feet from the creature I can now see writhing wildly in the trap, I pull my arm away from Felicity. “I can manage the rest of the way. The creature is not far.”

“O-Okay. I’ll just wait here for you. I doubt I’ll find the way back to the tree hollow by myself anyway.”
