For the second time today, I gave into the impulse and touched her face, lightly stroking her soft cheek with my finger. “So beautiful,” I murmured, momentarily forgetting how that would sound to her.

She blinked. Gray eyes focused on my face. Framed by thick dark lashes, they stared into my soul.

“Why are you looking at me like that?”

Shit. “Like what?”

“Like youknowme. Like we’ve spoken a thousand times, and you’re invested in helping me.” She frowned. “You really did watch over me for two months, didn’t you?”

With a nod, I confirmed it.

“But this is more.”

I didn’t say shit to that. “Are you still dizzy?”

She sighed. “No.”

“Then we need to head out.” I helped her up, placing my hands on her hips as I led her to my bike, refusing to release her until her sexy ass planted on my seat. Not wasting time, I slipped my helmet over her head, buckling the strap beneath her chin. I’d ride without one to ensure she was protected. I pulledmy leather jacket out of the saddlebags and helped her into it, zipping it up to her chin.

Her bare legs were too exposed, but that would have to wait. At least she had a pair of Nike’s on.

“Will my brother meet us somewhere?”

Once I took my place in front of her, I looked over my shoulder. “Not sure yet. Slide your arms around my waist and hold on. It’s gonna be a long ride.”

“Okay.”

“If you feel too tired to hold on, you tap my thigh. If you needanything, tap my thigh. It’ll get my attention fast.”

“I can do that.”

We left Carson City and rode toward Tonopah. I could stop at The Crossroads if I sensed we were being followed, so I didn’t worry about the ride. The Tonopah Royal Bastards always had a place for a member of the Devil’s Murder MC and vice versa.

Tonopah was the halfway point to Henderson. A good place to lay low if we could get there without Luke Grime or any of the Dirty Death following us. At some point, Crow would want to meet his sister, and it seemed a good idea to have that exchange take place before she got overwhelmed by the entire club.

After about an hour, Gail’s hands kept slipping. She rested against my back as the wind whipped around us, and I knew it was more than the cold air causing her fatigue. She’d never make it to Tonopah. Not tonight.

I figured the safe house in Hawthorne would work better than Tonopah if we could reach it but that didn’t happen either. I wasn’t willing to risk her falling off my bike.

We rolled up to a motel outside Lux. I had stayed here a few times on runs for the club, so I knew the owner. I parked my bike and brought Gail with me to secure a room, then rode around the back where no one could see my Harley from Hwy 95.

We entered after I swiped the key, bringing all our belongings from my saddlebags, which wasn’t much. I kept a travel bag like she had and an extra change of clothes. Not much else.

“Why don’t you take a shower?” I suggested after dropping my bags on the only table in the room. “It’ll help after the long ride.”

She nodded with a weary smile. “Okay.”

“I’ve got an extra t-shirt you can change into if you want.” I reached inside my bag and tugged it free, walking to her as I passed the shirt into her hand. “You need anything else?”

Her teeth nibbled on her bottom lip. “I need to eat something. All I’ve had today is a granola bar and yogurt for breakfast.”

Damn. That was nothing. “How about I order something while you shower? What’s your favorite?”

“In-N-Out Burger.”

I slapped a hand over my heart. “I’m in love.”

She giggled, then frowned. “I need protein. A chicken sandwich and iced tea. No sugar. Onion rings but no onions on anything.”
