My brain fired in all directions, consumed with the knowledge unlocked in my head. I had considered this often for the last two months, but now that I had confirmation and felt the bond snap into place, I dismissed all doubt.

My crow knew exactly where his mate had been.

Caw...caw.

The crow’s ebony wings spread outward above us, sensing the connection I just formed. He chittered in the sky, squawking out a raspy, celebratory kraa. I could see him through the gaps in the roof where the wood had rotted.

I dozed for an hour and held Gail as she slept. When the storm subsided, I woke her, watching as she dressed. I gave her a bottle of water and a protein bar from my bag.

“Be right back. I need to check in with Crow. We’ll head to the safe house next.”

She nodded, chewing as her gaze focused on the bright blue sky and beams of sunshine through the cracks in the barn.

I walked outdoors, sliding on my shades after I pulled them from my cut.

“Where the fuck is my sister?” Crow asked when he answered my call, his tone proving I waited too long to get in touch because he sounded pissed.

“Safe. We’re headed toward Tonopah. We got caught in a storm and had to take shelter, but no one has followed us.”

“You sure about that?”

“Positive, pres.”

“You going to the same place we played pool?”

“Yeah. It’s perfect.” Secluded. Pretty. Off the highway and away from trouble.

“I’m sending Cuckoo to meet up with you. Anything you need, he’ll get it.”

“Appreciate it, pres.”

“I spoke to Grim. Get Abigail to The Crossroads if there’s trouble.”

“Will do,” I promised.

“Is she okay after all this shit? Not freaking out?”

“Yeah, she is. She’s like her brother. Tough.”

He grunted. “Check in when you’re settled. Cuckoo will be there by noon.”

“No worries, pres. I got this.”

“I know.”

After the call, I walked inside the barn and held out my hand. “Come on, beautiful. Let’s get on the road.”

Gail laced our fingers. “I’m with you, Talon.”

Those words settled the anxiety in my gut. I hated being vulnerable on the road with her on the back of my bike and the chance that the club’s enemies could be waiting to ambush us. But she trusted me. I wouldn’t let her down.

TWO WEEKS LATER—

I spoiled Gail as soon as I got the chance. She lit up when I opened my laptop, gave her my login and credit card information, and told her to shop. So. . .she shopped.

My woman bought enough clothes, shoes, toiletry items, undergarments, and everything else that she needed to supply a small army. To be fair, she had to leave it all behind when we rushed from her house. Cuckoo delivered packages almost daily. He wasn’t my first choice, but Crow insisted.

I waited for him on the back deck of the ranch-style house the club bought a few years back, smoking since I didn’t have shit to do but wait. The architecture included an open floor plan and large windows, a U-shape, and a lower-pitched roof.We included a finished basement and a panic room. All the safe houses had an armory inside with enough guns and ammo to take a stand if we needed.
