I flipped him off.

Gail snickered. “You fight like an old married couple.”

She wasn’t wrong. Cuckoo had that effect on most of us. He liked to shake things up, and he was fucking good at it.

Gail served a heaping plate to Cuckoo and then placed one in front of me. I got a kiss on the cheek. Cuckoo didn’t.

She joined us, sitting on a stool I placed to my left. “So. I was wondering if you could tell me why there are always crows around here.”

Cuckoo paused with his fork halfway to his mouth.

I swallowed the bite I had in mine.

Neither of us spoke.

“It just seems odd,” she continued, “because I hear cawing often. It’s like they’re watching over us. Isn’t that strange?”

Cuckoo lowered his head and shoveled food into his mouth, avoiding the topic by ignoring her words and chewing his bites so long they were probably mush.

“Well, we’re friendly with them,” I replied.

Cuckoo snorted.

I shot him a glare.

“Friendly? What does that mean? Do you feed them?”

“Sure,” Cuckoo chuckled.

I punched his shoulder.

She took a bite of her salad, thinking it over. “Aren’t crows supposed to be good luck?”

“They are,” I replied, giving her a tight smile. “This is fucking delicious, beautiful. I’m fucking lucky you spoil me.”

Her expression softened. “You spoil me, too.”

Damn right, I did.

Cuckoo finished his food and stood. “Gotta run. Thanks, Gail.” He walked over and pecked her cheek. “You’re a fucking keeper.”

She laughed, and I narrowed my eyes.

“Don’t worry, Talon. I won’t try to steal her away.”

“Fuck off,” I laughed as he left, swishing that fucking dragon tail behind him.

Chapter 8

Ihad questions.A lotof questions.

I gave Talon two weeks, but now I felt restless and anxious, and I worried about my home, my car, and the dead body inside my bedroom. Nothing had been communicated to me, almost as if my brother had ordered Talon to remain silent and keep me sheltered. Ridiculous. I was a part of this now. I became involved the night my house was broken into and everything trashed.

No reason for secrets now.

Talon noticed my frustration as I cleared the counter and rinsed off the dishes after Cuckoo left. I left them in the sink, pulling down a bottle of Jack from the cupboards and placing a shot glass on the coffee table as I parked my ass on the black leather sofa.

“Talk to me, beautiful.”
