“I’m worried,” I admitted.

“Don’t be. He might be hurtin’, but he’ll come back to you. Trust me. Ain’t a thing that could keep that man away from you.”

Lou never saw us together. His comment didn’t make sense.

“You doubt me.”

“No, not really. I just don’t understand how you believe that when you never saw us together.”

“Well, Gail, honey, I don’t need to see you together. I know Talon. That boy has been restless and wild. He hasn’t slowed down since I met him.”

I could see Talon like that. He must have been a handful as a child.

“Known him most of his life,” Lou continued. “His dad was a mean one, but that ain’t Talon. Just the opposite. When Raven took him under his wing, I knew he’d turn out fine.”

“He did,” I agreed.

“And that’s how I know he’s comin’ back. He’s got to be head over heels for you, honey. With the way your brother has been scowlin’, I’m guessin’ he also believes it.”

I shook my head, thinking of Austin. “Crow is stubborn.”

“Like your daddy.”

“I wish I knew Rook.” My fingers wrapped around my mug. “You think he loved me, Lou? Is that why he kept me a secret?”

“I can’t say what his reasons were, Gail, but I do know that man must have loved you something fierce to protect you theway he did. I don’t doubt for a second that you and your brother meant everything to him.”

“Thank you, Lou. I needed to hear that.”

“Let it sink in, honey. Being loved is good for the soul.”

Chapter 13

Ihad to get to Gail. It was the only motivation that helped me push through the pain and forced me to keep walking no matter how many times I stumbled.

Above me, circling in an ominous inky cloud of feathers, the crows followed. There wasn’t much else they could do. The constant caws and kraas were almost deafening, but I couldn’t fly, and they couldn’t walk.

My crow, the one I bonded with years ago, landed on my right shoulder. He chittered as I fell to my knees. Again.

This was impossible. I would never make it to The Roost. I didn’t even know where the fuck I was. After I managed to escape from that underground prison on Undertaker’s land, I tried to find a road. A highway. Anything.

You’d think after most of the night, I would find someone, or they would stumble upon me. Nope. Didn’t happen.

Fatigue pressed in from all sides as I struggled to breathe.

I couldn’t die here. I refused.

My crow squawked in agreement.

It took every ounce of strength in my body to rise to my feet, and when I did, he hopped from my shoulder and got in my way. His wings rapidly flapped as he snapped his beak.

Crazy fucking bird.

“Hey,” I groaned.

He kept making noise, acting pissed, until the whole damn murder joined us on the ground.

“Okay. What’s the problem?”
