Evelyn didn’t know how long.

She wet herself when the lady wouldn’t stop.

She couldn’t help it.

This made the lady angry.

Her anger made Evelyn cry.

Still, they kept driving—until they stopped.

Evelyn was locked in the car.

Then she was pulled out of the car into a room.

Evelyn was then locked in the room.

She was all alone.

She was scared.

She wanted her mommy.

The lady came back with food.

Sandwiches and potato chips.

Evelyn didn’t like the sandwich.

She settled for the chips.

Her mommy wouldn’t like that.

She wanted her mommy desperately.

She watched the lady closely.

The lady couldn’t sit still.

Back and forth she paced, talking to herself.

She drank an entire bottle of something.

It made her speech blurry.

Nighttime came, but Evelyn couldn’t sleep.

Her shoulder hurt, and she was hungry.

Then sleep came, until pain woke her.

When she woke, the lady was asleep.

Evelyn watched her closely.

She wanted to run.

She wanted her mommy.
