After she’d spoken to Nina for a few minutes, she rose to her feet with her phone pressed to the side of her face and glanced at me, wordlessly informing me with her gaze that she was going to her room to continue speaking to Nina.

I nodded and waved her away with a smile, watching her walk into her bedroom before focusing on finishing my cooling pizza with a spicy blood sauce I’d managed to snag at Ni Daonni City’s airport.

Once I was done with my pizza, I cleared the table, repackaged Aurora’s leftover pizza in an airtight container, and placed it in the refrigerator. Then I sat back on the couch, resting my head on the headrest, unable to stop myself from listening in on Nina and Aurora’s conversation.

Even though I felt bad about what those boys had done to Aurora, there was a part of me that was happy that they’d screwed up.

But there was a reason for that.

Before she met them, Aurora had been mine alone.

The only reason they’d even had a chance with her was because I’d taken her for granted. Back then, my plans were simple. Based on my agreement with Keane Galway, Aurora’s father, I was going to pretend that Aurora was not my true mate until I got all the stuff in my family settled.

I had planned that once I’d killed my father, who, for as long as he lived, was a threat to Aurora and her family, I would destroy Les Fosses De Sang and get my records clean. Then I would tell Aurora that she was my true mate and we would live together happily ever after.

Unfortunately, those Crawford bastards just had to stick their noses in my business and my well-thought plans fell through.

Now that they’d screwed up, I was going to swoop in and court Aurora. Once the pack observer case was solved, we would get officially mated and live together forever in Ni Daonni City, far away from the Crawford Pack.

Aurora

After telling Nina everything that had happened at Aiden and Caden’s birthday party, she was so mad that she wanted to teleport to the city closest to Mac Tire City and take a night flight into Mac Tire City just so she could give Caden and Mateo a piece of her mind.

It took a while to calm her down, but afterward, she reassured me and consoled me, advising me to stay away from Mateo and Caden. We also talked about whether I should maintain my friendship with Aiden since he seemed like the innocent party of the three of them. But I decided that I didn’t want to be friends with Aiden Crawford anymore.

For numerous reasons. He was a great friend, but I knew that our relationship had veered way off the friendship track since we kissed in the car. His brother and Mateo were also a big negative that would always hang over our relationship, and I was so pissed off at them that I didn’t even want to see their faces.

If what Mateo had done to me had left a cut in my heart, then Caden knowing about it, agreeing to put up a video of me having sex with Mateo to entertain his birthday party guests, and the demeaning interrogation after? It’d been like getting stabbed in the heart multiple times.

I didn’t expect them to think I was a saint because I wasn’t. I knew my forged identity was suspicious, but I’d expected Caden, especially, to handle the situation with more maturity. I’d expected, maybe a talking to, a confrontation, or anything else but the way he handled the situation with Mateo.

But then again, maybe I deserved it. After all, I had, in fact, cheated on Caden with Levi. Even though I’d been in love with Levi before I ever had feelings for Caden, I’d still cheated not just with Levi, but even with Mateo and Aiden.

Over my conversation with Nina, I’d decided that talking to them or being around them was not good for me, especially since I seemed to have no self-control around them and they so greatly distrusted me.

Throughout the rest of my stay in Crawford Town, I planned to stay far away from the trio.

If I saw them coming from the left, I’d go down the path on the right.

And I wouldn’t be letting my guard down around them for a single second, so they wouldn’t have the chance to make a fool of me like they did at their birthday party.

Having made these decisions, I forced myself to sleep with my mother’s old recorded lullabies.

When I woke up around 4:50 am, I was already moving to get ready to run with Aiden before I remembered that I was in Levi’s apartment on the outskirts of Crawford Town and thus, miles away from the running trail I usually used near the Davis’ home. For the next few minutes, I sat on my bed staring at the wall groggily, trying to use my sleep-fogged brain to determine what I was going to do for training instead of running.

A few minutes later, Levi rescued me from my thoughts and took me to the gym on the first floor of his apartment building, which he’d booked for exclusive use from 5:00 am to 6:30 am.

Instead of running, Levi and I sparred with each other. At the end of our training, I realized that hiding my real fighting skills during sparring classes at Crawford University had made me forget some of my reflexes. Hence, I had to endure Levi making fun of me for ‘losing my touch’ as we ate some toast, omelets, and tea for breakfast.

Thankfully, the conversation shifted from my forgotten reflexes to the case at hand and our next move.

“Both of the people I remember from that day don’t seem to have anything to do with the murderer. And there were no surveillance cameras on the spot where I touched that person, so we’re back to square one.” I said as I sipped on my Matcha tea.

“We’re not back to square one. You’ve been gathering a lot of information on Henry Baker and his stay at Crawford University, right? What have you found?” Levi asked.

“Not much. He was a very solitary person. He had no friends and just a handful of acquaintances in his faculty. Those who knew him said he was very serious and reserved. But they all knew his daughter because she’d come to see him in his office from time to time. Hey, something just occurred to me . . . What if we’re looking for two murderers with different MOs? The guy whose mind I tapped into was way too bloodthirsty to have the ability and patience to coerce Henry Baker into committing suicide.”
