It's hard to control my temper when she's talking to me like this. However, I force my tone to remain polite. "I understand that, but Mr. Moore––"

"Next time you want to see me, book an appointment. I don't have time for any Tom, Dick, and Harry. Rachel, show her out."

I have no choice but to pick up the file from the floor as I'm basically shoved out of the office.

I hear a few titters, and my face flushes as I pick up the two papers that fell out of the file and flew outside the door. I turn around, but the door slams in my face.

Closing my eyes, I breathe to ten to calm myself.

I'm not getting past that door for now, so I had better deal with the other tasks and then come back. I make my way to the otherdepartments, but I'm forced to wait one hour for the Director of Analysis, and when he does show up, he tells me his assistant will send me the data. His assistant, however, gives me the evil eye and tells me she'll get around to it when she does, and if I'm in so much of a rush, then I should figure out a way to carry out the analysis myself. The finance department head is a female, and she refuses to give me the time of day, much like Sharon. I go back to the marketing department but end up having to wait forty-five minutes before being informed that Director Wheeler is too busy right now.

I return to my desk, discouraged and angry. I peek in at Adam, who is pacing his office, talking to someone on the phone. I quickly brew him a cup of chamomile tea and leave it at his desk. He goes through far too much coffee a day. Some soothing tea will be good for him. My wolf is satisfied at having taken care of him, and I head to my own desk to deal with this mess.

It's clear that no one will work with me. My eyes harden.

If they want to give me a tough time, then I also know how to play hardball.

I send out an email to the directors and screenshot the emails. I have a feeling these screenshots will come in handy. This is a place of business, not a children's playground. Rolling up my sleeves, I prepare myself a cup of tea as well and get to work. I've worked alongside different departments and know how the work is done. Downloading the software onto my laptop, I send an email to Gerald, asking him how to access the raw data on the surveys and the previous finance reports, and the data for the current project. He replies fairly quickly with a mild apology. So he knows what just happened.

I get to work.

I first deal with the analysis. Running the numbers in, I let the system do its job while I work on compiling the finance report. I go through the previous ones and extract what I need. When lunchtime arrives, Adam steps out of his office. "Lunch?"

I don't bother lifting my head from my work. "Not right now."

"What're you working on?" He approaches my desk. I don't stop him from looking and he frowns. "Why're you working on these? I told you to––"

"They don't want to do it. I was kicked out of their offices," I say calmly.

"Cynthia," Adam begins, and this time I look up at him, my expression steady.

"They are underestimating me. Let them. All this is not new to me. I've worked in all of these departments before. I know how things are done."

When he opens his mouth, I frown. "Let me handle this, please. This is my area of expertise."

Adam doesn't look pleased but just nods. "Fine. I trust you."

His words hit me right in the heart, and as I stare at him, he smiles. "What? Nobody ever told you they trusted you?"

"No," I respond simply. "It's a nice thing to hear."

He leans down and kisses the top of my head. My wolf rolls over, happy.

"I'll order some lunch and we'll work together."

He gets us Chinese food and brings his work to my office, sprawling on the couch, working away on his laptop while we both eat. The day draws to an end by the time I'm done.

"I'm emailing you the reports," I tell him. "And the marketing launch plan. I've come up with three plans, and details are attached to all of them. They're fine-tuned, no rough drafts. You can take a look. I'll print––"

"That's enough." Adam takes me by the arms. "I've been watching you work like crazy. I'm sure everything will be fine. I'll drop you home."

"Tony will drop me. He's outside," I tell him. "You still have work to do, and you have a meeting."

I pack up my things and am about to pick up my laptop when I hesitate. I look over to see Adam watching me, and I give him a small smile. "I'm going to leave this here."

He doesn't tell me to take it, and there's a small sting in my heart, but I know he has to protect his company and my loyalty is still to Jonathon.

As I head downstairs, my heart feels a little heavy.
