Ghost growled.

“If you want to save your mate, Zero-Six-Nine, that’s exactly what you’ll do.”

Ghost flinched. Hearing me call him that name must’ve hurt. It made something inside me ache, too. He was a person, not a number. Not Parker’s science experiment.

“Just to clarify, if Ghost goes with you, you’ll release Axel?” Phoenix said.

Ziggy turned his head. “Don’t,” he growled at Ghost.

“Yeah, it’s obviously a trap,” Robert said with a shrug.

Chris agreed with a nod. “He’s got no incentive to follow through on that. If Ollie opens that portal, what’s stopping him from making Axel walk through it, too?”

“Or just having Axel pull the trigger,” Robert added.

My stomach dropped.Don’t give him any fucking ideas, Robert! I thought you were on my side!

“That’s true,” Parker mused. “But if you don’t open the portal, and you’re telling the truth, we’ll all die, anyway. And if you’re lying, I’ll just paint the wall with this pathetic himbo’s tiny brain.”

Hey, my brain is perfectly normal sized, thank you!

Ollie shifted his weight, looking from me to Phoenix. “Whatever you want me to do, you’d better decide quickly. We’re running out of time.”

Parker stepped out of his hiding place, brandishing a gun pointed at the back of Ollie’s head. He crept forward, slowly closing on their position.

I tried again to communicate with my eyes, staring at Parker.Turn around, you idiots! He’s right there!

Ghost snarled and shimmered out of sight.

Fuck.

“Where is he?” Parker made me shout.

I breathed a sigh of relief when he made me swing the gun down from my temple, but the relief was short-lived since he started aiming it around the room. “Come out, Zero-Six-Nine. You know Papa doesn’t like to play games when he’s angry.”

A growl echoed on the left side of the room.

Parker swung the gun around and squeezed the trigger. The gun barked once, twice, three times, bullets flying wildly. There was a loud yelp from Ghost and his form shimmered briefly.

No!

“There you are,” Parker made me say, forcing my lips into a painful smile. Bloody footprints appeared on the floor, marking Ghost’s movements as he fled for cover.

No! Run, Ghost!I gritted my teeth and squeezed my eyes closed as Parker made my finger start to squeeze the trigger once more. The gun went off. I didn’t see where it hit because I wasn’t opening my eyes. They were the only thing I could control on my body, and the one advantage I had. If I couldn’t see, I couldn’t shoot, right?

“Dammit!” Parker made me curse and my fingers were suddenly scratching at my eyes. “Open your eyes, you insolent bastard!”

I refused. I could feel Parker’s control slipping just a little. The angrier he got, the harder it became for him to maintain focus and control. I just needed to piss him off a little more and…

Something barreled into me from behind and I fell to the floor with a loud, “Oof!”

The gun went off and then skittered out of my fingers. I cursed and Parker made me start to crawl after it. Before I could get very far, a familiar weight settled on my back.

“Get the crown!” Phoenix shouted.

Ghost’s heavy breaths fell on the back of my neck and claws curled delicately around the crown, but it couldn’t simply be lifted off. Parker had used some sort of device to fuse the damn thing to my skull. If Ghost just yanked it out…

Ghost tugged, and I screamed in pain. My brain went fuzzy. Parker’s slimy presence retreated.
