He hugged me back. “Not yet but…Free.”

I squeezed him tighter. “That’s right, Ghost. You’re free. He can’t ever hurt anyone else ever again.”

A radio crackled to life, and we all turned to stare at Phoenix as an unfamiliar voice came over the airway. “This is Bird One. We have visual confirmation. Requesting permission to drop payload.”

“Negative, Bird One” came Mozley’s frantic voice. “Pull up! My men are still down there!”

“No can do, Baby Bird. Primary mission is priority. Bird One, you are good to go.”

“Fuck,” Phoenix pointed at Ollie. “We need that portal yesterday, Ollie.”

Ollie nodded and extended his hands. “You got it.”

We stumbled through theportal as an explosion rocked the nearby forest. My cabin was right there in front of us. Damn, home had never looked so good. Mozley and Ben came running toward us, waving their arms.

Ben was saying something, but my head hurt so badly, I couldn’t make it out until it was too late. “Get down, you idiots! Get down!”

The shockwave from the blast smashed into us from behind, sending us all sprawling on the ground. Glass exploded and something crashed loudly into something else. I threw my hands over my head and winced as I bumped into the remnants of the crown.

When it was over, I lifted my head and cursed at the sight in front of me. My ears were still ringing, but that was suddenly the least of my problems. My house was a disaster. All the windows had been blown out and part of the wall was just gone. The generator had wedged itself in the kitchen wall, and that was to say nothing of whatever damage had been done to the inside.

“Well, fuck,” I groaned, rising to my knees.

“I’ve seen worse,” Robert said. “Maybe you can fix it.” Just as he said that, the rest of the wall groaned and came down. Robert winced. “Or maybe not.”

“Looks like you owe me a house, Mozley,” Honor said, limping toward us.

The front yard was full of military vehicles and tents. When the fuck had all that happened? Honor was limping away from one of them, his arm in a sling.

I frowned. “What happened to you?”

Before Honor could answer, Ziggy was scooping him up, sobbing like a baby. “I thought I’d lost you! Don’t you ever do that again!”

“Easy, Kitten. I’m fine. And don’t worry. After this, I’m retiring, and I mean it this time.”

“You had better!” Ziggy said with mock anger, carrying Honor toward their van, which now had a few new dents.

“I’ll talk to you later, kid!” Honor shouted. “Glad you’re alive! Oh, and Mozley? I was serious about that house. I’ll call you!”

Mozley groaned. “Please don’t. God, if I never hear from Honor Rose again, I will die a happy man.” He dusted grass from his suit jacket and looked over at the rest of us. “What the fuck is that in your head, Axel?”

“Oh this?” I tapped the screws still sticking out of me. “New body modification trend. All the kids are doing it.”

He sighed and pointed toward a big green tent with a red cross on it. “Go see the medics. All of you. We can debrief after.”

Ghost growled at him.

Mozley swallowed and held up his hands. “I meantpleasego see the medics?”

Ghost snorted and nodded.

“Happy to report the mission was a success,” Phoenix reported. “You won’t be hearing from Parker ever again.”

“Good.” Mozley breathed a sigh of relief. “With the destruction of the base—again—that should bring an end to all this hubbub.”

“What about the shadow benefactor?” Ben asked with a frown. “Wasn’t there someone in the government pulling the strings? Don’t you need to take him out or something?”

Mozley smiled. “That’s on a need to know basis, kid, and I can neither confirm nor deny any of that. Especially to you.”
