I enjoyed the peacefulness of the moment and the opportunity to watch him unguarded.

He was so unforgettably gorgeous to me, his pink lips swollen from my kisses, his body still flushed and warm. His blond hair was a tangled mess on my pillow, and I took a moment to drink in the heady sight of him in my bed.

I realized then and there that tonight wasn’t the culmination of the passionate tug-of-war between us.

It was just the beginning.

And since Iain didn’t do the overnight thing, that meant I was one of the rare men fortunate enough to earn his trust. Just thinking about waking up next to him had my heart thrumming wildly and my blood racing hot.

I stroked one finger over his flushed cheek, memorizing the feel of his smooth skin and dark blond stubble until I reached his lips. So full and tender, I was aching hard to kiss him again.

I never knew what temptation was until now. Until him.

But I held back.

Because the next time I kissed him, I wanted him to see me with eyes wide open. I knew there would be fear there, trepidation, and uncertainty. But I also knew something special sparked between us, and as crazy as it might seem to anyone on the outside, I wanted him for more than one night. He could run, he could brush me off, but I wasn’t going anywhere.

I knew my heart, and it was reaching for Iain. And my gut told me he was reaching for me, too. Whether he acknowledgedthe magnetic connection between us or shattered my heart into a million pieces, well, that was a worry for another day.

I slid my arm around his waist and cuddled up as close to him as I could get, then closed my eyes again.

Until I heard the faint rumbling of his husky voice.

“Dawson. Baby.”

No, I wasn’t teasing Iain when I said he talked in his sleep.

It was adorable, and I couldn’t help but smile when he said my name. It gave me that flicker of hope that maybe, just maybe, I wasn’t alone in my feelings.

Since I didn’t need to be up at the crack of dawn, I closed my eyes again and drifted off to sleep.

The next time I woke up, Iain was on his side, and I was spooning him. The sun peeked through the edges of the curtains and cast the bed in a soft glow.

A deep sense of satisfaction settled in my bones, something I hadn’t felt in ages.

Iain and I weren’t perfect by any means, but this moment sure felt like it.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand, and I reluctantly rolled away from Iain and reached for it. It was just after eight, so there was no rush to get out of bed. The guys didn’t need to be at the venue until noon.

The first message was from Jaxon, courtesy of my mom (I didn’t allow him to have a phone yet), wishing me a Happy Valentine’s Day and accompanied by a funny GIF of dancing hearts.

Shit, I’d all but forgotten about the holiday.

I texted Jaxon back with a promise to call tonight. Then I remembered that his class was going to exchange cards and have a party. I’m sure he’d have all sorts of stories to tell me when I called. I made a mental reminder to pick up a gift for him beforewe left the city. Jaxon loved to read, so maybe there was a nearby bookstore I could pop into.

The other messages were work-related but nothing urgent, nothing that couldn’t wait another hour or two.

After I sent my reply to Jaxon, I put the phone aside. I rolled back over and pulled Iain into my arms again, letting out a sigh of contentment.

Iain turned his head toward me and blinked, his blond lashes fluttering. The warmest brown eyes stared back at me.

“Happy Valentine’s Day,” I whispered and gave him a languid kiss.

Surprisingly, he kissed me back. No hesitation, pure passion.

But when I pulled back, and he blinked again, I nearly burst out laughing at the sheer panic that washed over Iain’s face.

Instead of letting his shock get to me, I reached for the pillow under my head and playfully whacked him in the face with it.
