“He left.”

There. I’d said it. Another twist of the imaginary knife in my chest.

“Bullshit,” Ollie said. “What makes you think that?”

I wasn’t going to cry. I wasn’t going to cry. I was stronger than this.

“He took his clothes, and he’s not here anymore.”

“Matt, he has a home. He must have gone home. He’s allowed to go home.”

Yeah. I was an idiot. He didn’t need to remind me.

I swallowed.

“Conny is a nice guy,” Ollie went on. “So, there’s something you’re not telling me here.”

Trust him to talk me down. He was nineteen. It should’ve been me teaching him all about life, supporting and gently guiding him through his heartbreaks and infatuations. Yet here he was, and I could almost hear him rolling his eyes. Well, watch him actually. We were in the twenty-first century, after all. I accepted his video call request, even though I didn’t really want to.

“OK. Talk, Matt, because you’re being stupid here.”

“I’m not.” My chest was doing strange things, and I didn’t even know where to start.

“Did you let him fuck you?”

“Ollie!”

“What? That’s what you always told me. Don’t let them fuck you because then all the fun is over. String them along. Make them work for it.”

“I never said that!” I protested.

“Well, maybe not, but we both know how this works. So he fucked you and then fucked off. Doesn’t sound like Conny at all.”

“You don’t even know him!” I wasn’t sure why I was defending him. I was angry, beyond ashamed, and my little brother just laughed.

“I’ll ring you back,” he said. He hung up.

I frantically jabbed at the phone and brought up Con’s number—only because I didn’t want Ollie to get to him first because what if he hadn’t left? What if I was just…

It went straight to voicemail.

I wasn’t having that.

My fingers shook as I tried again.

Nothing.

I jumped out of my skin when my phone rang. Ollie again.

“What?” I snapped.

“You’re such an idiot.”

Sometimes I loved my little brother. Sometimes I wanted to strangle him.

“OK. I googled that show. The production set is at Shepperton, but they mostly film on location. The main set is about twenty minutes from you, but they also use several other sites.”

“And?” I wasn’t following, and my hands were shaking to the point that I could barely hold the phone, despite him laughing at me.
