“Which is why it’s so funny. I like that Finn’s got a mate, and he’s even polite and friendly with Hugo’s mum. How weird is that?”

“Friendship is good.”

“Friendships are healthy. That’s what Finn said this evening when I suggested I come see you. He said you’re good for me. I agreed.”

“Of course I am!” I boasted, tugging at his hair. “You’re my daddy, remember? And I am yours.”

“Daddy.” He huffed a laugh. Even when we disagreed on things, we always had this. Always had us.

“Do you at least make out?” he asked, back to the thing I didn’t really want to talk about.

“Of course we do. We’ve established…stuff.”

“Good,” he said softly. “And sex isn’t everything. You’re perfect just as you are. Don’t let him push you into anything you’re not ready for. It’s not worth it. No sex and a close comfortable relationship is better than all the awkward shit that comes with doing things neither of you want.”

“Or need.” I had to stick in there.

“Or need,” he agreed. “You’re amazing. I think Hugo knows that.”

“Of course he does.” I grinned. “I’m his boyfriend, aren’t I?”

“And you took him to see Anna.”

“Yeah.”

“Big step.”

I poked my finger in his chest. “Shut up.”

“You shut up.”

I smiled. Held him tighter.

The next thing I knew, Hugo was poking me awake and standing behind the sofa with a grin on his face.

“Oi!” He half whispered as I shook awake.

“Oh!” Yeah. Not the best scene to come home to, finding your boyfriend snuggled up on the sofa with the restaurant manager from work.

“It’s just Mark.” I tried to get up, tapping Mark on the cheek. “Dude.”

“Not your dude,” he countered, almost falling off the sofa. “Hey, Hugo!”

“Hey.” Hugo was being weird. Like he was laughing, which was normal, but this situation was not normal. He hung up his jacket, ripping the hoodie over his head and giving me a little flash of his stomach as his top rode up. And down.

Sex. It played on my mind a lot these days, sometimes in a terrifying way. Other times, it was comfortable. I liked his body. I liked how he felt against me. I liked touching him, I really did. So much that I almost knocked the wine glasses off the table in my quest to get to him.

Hugo.

My Hugo.

He was in my arms, his body against mine and my face in his hair as I breathed him in.

“You smell like Mark.” He laughed.

“And I always smell gorgeous.” Mark piped up. “I know my aftershaves, but babe, this wine is rank. What the fuck?”

“Bitter,” I commented.
