“I know.” I met her gaze over my shoulder. “I love you guys, too.”

They knew I needed space sometimes, and they didn’t hate me for it.

“We’ll text you tomorrow,” Tatum promised. “Answer, okay?”

“I will.” It was the truth.

My door closed behind me, and I let out another long breath.

Evan was gone.

What did that mean for me?

It meant I was free…

And if I was free, I didn’t want to hide. Not from one person, at least.

I gave myself a few more minutes to consider the consequences of what I was considering, then finally launched into action.

twenty

ZANDER

“Miles?”I knocked on the door to her room and waited for her to answer. The action had come and gone. Though I needed a shower badly, and had blood crusting my shirt to my skin in half a dozen places, I needed to see her first.

Her friends said she needed space to process everything, but she could have her space after I saw with my own eyes that she was okay.

“Miley?” I repeated, knocking louder. “I need to make sure you’re alright. Don’t make me break another damn door. You know I’ll do it.”

A moment of silence passed.

Then another.

I was starting to get worried.

But, when I turned the doorknob, it opened without a problem.

My forehead creased when I didn’t find her on her bed.

Or in her bathroom.

I checked the closet, just for good measure—and found it empty.

Shit.

“Miles?” My yell echoed through the house.

Someone would’ve noticed if she’d left, wouldn’t they?

My alarms should’ve gone off if a window had opened.

The separation psychosis should’ve started to set in.

There was?—

“In here!” she called out.

My panic dried up as soon as it had set in, and my shoulders relaxed. Her voice was coming from my room.
