I let go of his arm, grabbed my phone and folder, and bee-lined it to my car.

If I stayed any longer, he would’ve been my meal.

And I was so hungry, I didn’t know if I could stop once I started drinking from him.

MILEY

I didn’t leavemy apartment for the rest of the day. It was beautiful enough that I didn’twantto leave, with an open floorplan and a gorgeous view of the mountains. Technically, it belonged to Tatum’s mate (and Zander’s brother) Rafael. After I was turned, they moved my shit in and told me I was living there.

Since I’d just become a vampire, and it was a lot safer and nicer than the apartment I had shared with Brynn and Tatum before, I agreed.

Reluctantly.

The fact that the demons were stupidly rich made me feel a little better about accepting their help. Eventually, I had stopped feeling bad about it.

For the most part, at least.

Over the next few hours,I paced, cursed, and planned.

Or at least, attempted to plan.

I hated that there was no right answer in the situation.

When I couldn’t run through the possibilities anymore, I finally texted Brynn to ask if she was busy that night. Her brother August, who was a dragon shifter (unlike her—she was human), was still living with her. And smothering her.

She had taken over baking all the candy for all three of our coffee shops. Tatum and I paid her for the products and her time, of course. When Tatum was in town, she helped out too, but it had become Brynn’s thing over the past few months. She was getting worn out, but I had a plan in place to take that weight off her in the near future.

Anyway, I knew her answer before I even sent the text.

She replied immediately that she’d be over as soon as she finished her last batch of the current seasonal truffles. It was the middle of June, so they were lemony-blueberry goodness. I couldn’t eat as much candy as either of my best friends, but I still enjoyed indulging once or twice a week.

I continued pacing, planning, and cursing, and added waiting to that list.

Soon enough, Brynn typed in the door code and slipped into my apartment. Her blue eyes were bright, and she wore her typical smile, her blonde hair tied back in a ponytail and her golden skin a bit paler than usual. Most people wouldn’t have seen the exhaustion in her expression, but I wasn’t most people. “Hey, Miles!” Her smile vanished as she looked at me. “What’s wrong? What happened?”

I wasn’t going to tell hereverything—but when I opened my mouth, it all came out.

The hunger.

The stockpile.

The puking.

The potential mate.

TheZander.

Brynn called Tatum halfway through the hunger bit, so she didn’t miss the unraveling of my damn sanity.

I was the put-together one.

I kept things running and organized.

And I was falling apart.

Hell, maybe I had already fallen apart.
