My best friend’s smile was innocent, but the girl knew exactly what she was doing.

He didn’t sit down. “I’m fine, Sweetheart.”

The look she sent me told me she thought the nickname was adorable.

“You don’t look fine.”

“I am.”

Huffing, I went back to work.

He stepped out of the room for something a few minutes later, and I grumbled to Brynn, “He’s so damn stubborn.”

She grinned. “And you’re not?”

Well.

Ahem.

“You couldn’t be with a pushover, Miles. You’d walk all over him, and you’d get bored. And that’s not an insult, by the way. It’s a fact.”

“Evan wasn’t stubborn.”

“Evan was manipulating you.” She said it matter-of-factly, and my lips curved downward.

“I know. It’s just… I’ve never had anything even almost as good as that, you know? What does it say about me that the best sex of my life was with someone who was using me?”

“Have you ever left yourself open to having better?” she countered.

The words took me by surprise.

“You still haven’t given me details about anything,” she reminded me. “I can’t make a real judgment without the details. From what I do know, I think you just opened up with him in a way you’ve refused to consider with anyone else. The sex was good, because you liked him.”

Zander stepped into the room. “Who are we talking about?”

I shot her a dark look.

“I was telling her the advice Tatum gave me about my last lover. He was Latino.” She fanned her face, selling the lie pretty darn well. “You should’ve seen his dick.”

Zander snorted. “Somehow, I’ll survive.” He didn’t look suspicious… but he didn’t look entirely convinced, either.

“What do you think?” she asked Zander, and my gaze jerked to her. “If you sleep with someone, and the sex is the best of your life, what do you do when it’s over? Stop trying? Look for someone just as good?”

“Sex is better with an emotional connection. Assuming the next guy knows what he’s doing, and the feelings are mutual, it won’t be just as good. It’ll be better.”

My stomach tightened.

Brynn feigned considering what he’d said. “I’ll think about it.”

Zander shrugged and went back to unpacking.

I glared at her the moment he was looking away, and she grinned, mouthing, “You’re welcome.”

It wasone in the morning by the time we got everything unpacked, and I was worried Zander was going to keel over any second.

He didn’t, of course.

I heard him start snoring about five seconds after he went to bed, though.
