“Well, I do. August is going to have issues with—dammit.” She huffed. “He can’t just do what he wants all the time, for reasons.”

“So he’ll have to leave soon?” I asked.

“In theory. He’s decided that I can’t handle life on my own anymore, so we’ll see.”

We stepped out of the building, and I was entirely unsurprised to find Rafael and August sitting at a table near the entrance. Rafael couldn’t be far from Tatum because of their sealed mate bond, and August was just obnoxiously protective of his little sister.

At least Zander wasn’t overbearing about his protection, for the most part.

I hugged my friends goodbye, and slipped into my car. My gaze caught on a man beneath a streetlight, and my heart stopped.

Evan.

It was Evan.

And he was staring at me.

I locked my car quickly, but the action didn’t calm my fears. A vampire could get into a locked car without much hassle if they needed or wanted to.

My phone buzzed, and my gaze jerked down to the screen.

Evan

You’re not safe with them.

I resisted the urge to shoot back a good old,“Because I was so safe with you when you drained my blood and let your boss nearly starve me to death.”

Interacting with him would only push him to keep doing what he was doing.

With a shaky hand, I hit the button to call Rafael instead, keeping my eyes on Evan.

His lips curved upward, as if he was amused by whatever it was he thought he saw.

“Hello?” Rafael answered on the first ring. His car was still in the parking lot—I could see it in my rearview mirror.

“Evan’s below the streetlight in front of me,” I whispered.

“What happened?” Tatum asked, as Rafael’s door opened. My gaze lifted to my mirror as he shifted and crossed the street in a heartbeat, but when my eyes went back to the light, my heart nearly stopped again.

Evan was gone.

Rafael didn’t doubt what I’d said, his gaze scanning the dark streets around him. He looked back at me and shook his head.

There was no sign of him.

“What happened, Miles?” Tatum spoke again on the other side of the phone, but the device buzzed in my hand. I jerked it away from my ear, and saw another message.

Evan

I made you what you are. You belong to me, or in the ground.

My ears rang.

I gripped my phone so tightly the screen cracked, my body transforming in response to the panic.

I was a vampire.

I was supposed to be safe.
