“Shit, are they going to come after you?” That’s borrowed trouble he doesn’t need.

“I hope the fuck not, but these assholes all seem to think that making a deal with him is like making it with me. Hell, I wouldn’t make a deal with that idiot.”

“Well, watch your back. The Popovs don’t play.”

“I will. Maybe I’ll take a page from Drago’s book and find myself an American girl and live there,” he chuckles.

“Good luck, my friend.” I’ve found my bride and have no intention of leaving my motherland. I end the call, and we scope out the home, finding everything ruined with the distinct smell of piss and decomposition.

Alek looks at the rubble. “Do you think this is a distraction, or has Abram met with one of his enemies?”

It could be either. However, for now, the answer will have to wait. Abram is the least of my concerns. With so many people after him, there’s no need to worry about us getting to him.

“Who knows? Let’s go before Volchek’s dogs get a whiff of us in the area.” If this is a ploy to look like he’s run, then someone will be watching to see which of his enemies have stopped by.

“Let’s go to Vlad’s summer estate.” It’s only about an hour from where we are, so Alek and I make the drive. We head toward his compound, slowing down as we approach. None of the vehicles are in the vicinity, so we move in closer. I bring out a specialized heat-seeking drone and fly it over the home and scan the area for warm bodies. The property has been abandoned, but from the view it’s been rigged with explosives. The bastard was expecting me to come barging in, but I’m not that foolish.

Sergei, one of my operatives who has eyes on Volchek, calls me. “What’s going on?”

“He’s fled the country. I’ve intercepted a few calls, but we think he’s heading to the States.”

“Are you serious?” The fucking pussy.

“Yes. All signs point to him arriving in France and then another flight leaving for New York tomorrow.” It could be another ruse or he could just be on the run with his tail between his legs. I’ve nearly wiped out his entire fortune with a couple of clicks, dismantling his empire from the inside out.

“Also, we still have your guest at the house ready for your questioning.”

I think about the conversation I had this morning. “Hello Father Leo. I need a favor.”

“Anything for you, my boy.”

“I need you to perform a wedding today.”

“A wedding today?”

“Yes. Isn’t it too soon for a wedding?”

“It’s the perfect time.” I hear the line click, knowing someone else is listening in. My men run a scan, and it’s Volchek’s line.

“I suppose I can marry you today if you wish to come to the church.”

“No, it will be here, Father Leo.”

“This won’t make Volchek go away.”

“I don’t recall asking your opinion on that matter. Get here by four o’clock.” I end the call while my men listen into call between Father Leo and Volchek. The words burn in my ears as I learn the truth of my parents’ death.

Yes, I can’t believe the information I’d been given this morning regarding his betrayal. I had plans to use him before I made him pay, but I couldn’t taint a marriage to my Katya with a murderer pronouncing husband and wife.

“Boss, Boss. You there?”

“Yes, Sergei. We’ll be there shortly.” I look to Alek. Time to send the vermin fleeing. Tossing several bombs through the windows, I watch as one of Vlad’s two compounds begins to smolder and then explode as the devices inside give way. Enjoying the fun, I send one more bomb into his fountain that my father recommended to Vlad.

“Where is that asshole at?” Alek asks.

“He’s heading to the States.”

“I’m betting he’s looking for assistance.”
