“Thank you, Matt. I think these two have some questions. I’ll call you back later.”

“Aren’t you forgetting something?” he asks with a smirk, the TV turning off and his voice coming through the phone once more. “I believe you have a song to sing.”

“Right,” I say, taking the phone off speaker and holding it up to my ear.

“Aunty Pearl?” Nora’s small voice comes through the phone.

“Which song would you like, sweetheart?” I send Narissa and Kristle an apologetic look and hope they will be patient.

“The one about the ocean waves,” she says.

I immediately begin singing one of the lullabies of my people. I sing to her of the tides of time and how the waters are ever-flowing and ever-changing.

“And…she’s out like a light,” Bree whispers into the phone. “That was the easiest bedtime we’ve had in weeks.”

“Anytime, Bree. I’ll call soon.”

“You better.” She hangs up before I can say anything else, and I turn back toward Kristle and Narissa.

“We’re welcome there?” Narissa jumps into her questions immediately and is obviously skeptical.

“Everyone is welcome there. It’s meant to be a safe place for all supernaturals.”

“Mom…” Kristle says, looking at her with a wary hope shining in her eyes.

“Can you take Kristle with you to the island first? Then, if Kristle believes it is safe, I’ll send the rest.”

“Yes, of course. It’s only about a day’s swim…but I have people I could call. Friends who could teleport us there and back within minutes.”

“Witches?” Narissa hisses.

“Yes, but they’re trustworthy, I promise.” I rush to allay her fears. “We can go somewhere other than your home to call them if that would make you feel better.”

“No,” Kristle interrupts. “We don’t want to risk drawing any attention.”

“Call them,” Narissa agrees with a growl in her voice, “but return tomorrow by sundown or we will hunt for you.”

I pick the phone back up, send a picture of myself in the living room to Breanne, and ask her to forward it to Skar or Opal. Within moments, Skar, the black-haired menace, is flashing into the living room. Both Narissa and Kristle bare their teeth and fall into a fighting stance.

“Oh, hello,” Skarlyt says. “Somebody said you could use a pickup.”

Regardless of how she stumbles into a room, Skarlyt always makes it seem like she’s meant to be there.

“Kristle and Narissa, this is Skarlyt Moon. High Priestess of the Coven of the Moon.”

“Nice to meet you both. Oh, wow. I love your hair!” Skarlyt exclaims. She ignores their tense stances and lifts a strand of Kristle’s hair in awe.

“Skarlyt,” I scold. When she turns to me, her face is a picture of innocence.

“What?”

“We’ve talked about personal space before,” I remind her. “Especially with sea nymphs.”

“Kristle didn’t mind,” Skarlyt claims. “Right?”

“Well…” For a moment, Kristle seems to have forgotten her suspicion. It seems she can’t determine how to respond to Skarlyt.

“See, I told you she didn’t mind,” she says, completely unaware of the flabbergasted sea nymph next to her.
