Loukas spins.

“As much as I would love for you to be with me, I don’t want you to get hurt. I’ll make a plan to get Zach and Amelia out of there with me.”

I nod, agreeing that we need a plan and knowing that we can’t leave his children behind. “Tomorrow?”

“I’ll meet you at the water's edge tomorrow, and we will see what we can both come up with,” he says, placing a soft kiss on my lips once more.

“Loukas!” The voice shouts once more, closer this time.

“I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow,” I agree. I help him push the boat back out into the water and watch as he rows away. I stand, watching until he’s a small speck on the horizon before pulling off my dress, shoving it into my bag, and hopping back in the water. My shift overtakes me quickly. I feel almost whole for the first time in my life, like ahole inside me I didn’t even know was there has been filled just by meeting my mate.

I swim to the small island where Skarlyt dropped me off before pulling the phone out of my bag and calling her.

“Pearl?”

“Can you meet me at the spot you picked me up?”

“Is everything okay?” she asks, her voice sleepy.

“Yes. No. I don’t know. I think I need your help.”

“I’ll be there in a minute,” Skar says before hanging up the phone.

While waiting for Skarlyt, I throw a pair of jeans and a T-shirt on and sit down on a large rock, thinking over the events of the day. I’ve met my mate and, even though it doesn’t seem possible, his life is even more complicated than my own.

“Brrr…I donotmiss this cold!”

I spin on the spot to find Skarlyt dressed in her black silk pj’s.

“It’s not even that cold,” I tell her.

She waves her hand. “That’s because you’re a shifter, you run hot.”

“Actually, I’m asea nymph.”

“Potato Po-ta-to. You still shift into something. The fact that you shift into an aquatic animal just means you’re even more used to the cold.”

I shake my head and smile at my friend. She and I could sit here and argue all day about semantics, but I have more important things to do.

“You’re right.”

Her mouth drops open, probably not expecting me to give up so easily. The two of us have had hour-long debates in the past, and she was definitely gearing up for one.

“Okay. What’s wrong?” she asks, stepping up and placing a hand on my forehead like she’s checking for a fever. “Are you sick?”

I slap her hand away. “No, I’m not sick. I just think we have more important things to do than spend the next hour discussing the cold and why I don’t feel it as much as you.”

“Puh-lease,” she scoffs. “We could’ve gone for at least two hours.”

I nod. “Of course. But I was hoping you could help me with something instead.” I wait for her acknowledgement before continuing. “Is there a way to stop someone from being tracked with a locator spell?”

Her face goes from playful to serious in the blink of an eye.

“What do you mean?”

“Is there something you can spell so that the person holding it can’t be tracked by other witches? Kind of like the barrier spell does for the island so that people can’t find it.”
