“Let her go,” Zach says, clenching his teeth. His hands are balled into fists at his sides.

“No,” Sabrina says, with an evil smirk I know all too well.

Amelia cries out and starts thrashing around. My knuckles turn white as I force myself to stay outside this building, knowing that any punishment Amelia gets will only be worse if I interfere. As fucked up as that fact is, it’s the truth. To stop Amelia from getting hurt worse, I can’t interfere.

Luckily, I don’t have to do anything because, in the blink of an eye, black smoke begins to coil from Zach’s hands to wrap around Sabrina’s neck. The evil witch brings her hands to herthroat, trying to grasp the magic without success. As she does, Amelia drops to the ground. A smile graces my lips at the lengths my son will go to protect his baby sister.

Rather than keeping his eye on his opponent though, he rushes to his sister's side as she lands in a heap behind him.

“Melia, are you okay?”

She nods sullenly, and I watch in horror as Sabrina catches her breath. An angry snarl comes from her mouth as she unleashes her magic on him. I need to teach him to never look away from an opponent, not until you're one thousand percent sure that the threat is gone.

“Zach!” Amelia screams.

“That’s quite enough out of you!” Sabrina snaps.

“What is the meaning of this?” Antonia demands as she flings the door open. I crouch down lower, trying to remain hidden from her sight.

As soon as Sabrina sees Antonia enter the room, she drops Zach and turns her ire onto Amelia.

“That girl is a menace.”

“A menace, you say?” Antonia asks, raising a perfectly plucked eyebrow.

Sabrina, braver than most would be in her position, nods.

“Perhaps if you let her see Loukas, she would be more agreeable,” Zach says as he gets to his feet, causing Antonia to turn her sights on him rather than Sabrina or Amelia.

“And why would that be?”

I watch Zach’s face as he’s caught off guard by the question. He raises his chin as he answers honestly.

“Because she misses him. She spent time with him every single day, and now she hasn’t seen him in weeks.”

Now, it’s Antonia’s turn to be caught off guard by his answer. and I watch with rapt attention to see what she does next. Instead of lashing out, she surprises me by contemplatinghis answer for only a few moments before nodding slightly in agreement.

With the hope that Antonia will allow Amelia to spend time with me, I rush away from the window and back to the clearing where I normally spend my days and sit down to meditate and plan. If Antonia brings me Amelia, there's a chance that Zach could come with her and the three of us could leave this place today.

Ten minutes later, I’m actively plotting our escape when the most beautiful sound reaches my ears.

“Daddy!” I open my eyes to see my little girl running toward me, her long hair blowing behind her.

I stand quickly, my bare feet slapping against the grass as I rush toward her, closing the distance. She leaps into my arms, and I catch her, tears streaking down both our faces at being reunited. Even my owl is flapping his wings in excitement.

“You get two hours with her,” Antonia says, and I look up, not caring if she sees the wetness on my cheeks.

“Thank you,” I manage to croak out as I continue rubbing Amelia’s back through her sobs.

“Don’t thank me. Just make sure she knows how to behave when I return for her.”

With that, she spins on her heel marching back toward the coven.

“Let me look at you, my beautiful girl,” I say, pushing Amelia backward and running my hands over her face, growling at the sight of the dark bruises surrounding her throat, the bruising on her cheekbones, and the blood caking her hair.

“I missed you so much, Daddy!” she exclaims between hiccups, throwing herself back in my arms.

“I missed you too, Pumpkin,” I tell her, gently lifting her and carrying her to the water. Once I set her down, I gently wash theblood out of her hair and notice a couple more fish waiting for me.
