“She’s not safe here. I need you to take her and not come back.”

Pearl steps forward, putting her hand on my arm. Amelia flinches backward, further into my arms.

I hear voices getting closer, and I begin to panic.

“Please,” I plead with Pearl, squeezing Amelia before thrusting her toward Pearl. “I need you to take her and keep her safe. If you can get my family away from Greece, they’ll take responsibility for her. They can’t stay there; that’s the first place they’ll look for her.”

“Loukas,” Pearl says, trying to keep a hold of the squirming owl in her arms. “I can’t?—"

“You have to go.” I glance back, the voices getting closer. “Now.”

Pearl looks down at Amelia and back before nodding solemnly.

I lean forward, capturing Pearl's lips with mine hoping that it isn’t the last time I will taste her but making sure it counts if it is. We break apart, both panting, and I place a soft kiss on Amelia’s head.

“You’re going to be okay, Pumpkin.” I turn to head off the coven members coming to retrieve Amelia.

“Wait,” Pearl calls out, pushing two items into my hand. “Here. There are two necklaces. One for you, and one for Zach. They’ll stop any witch from tracking you. That includes my witches.” I take them both, watching as she secures a blue necklace around Amelia’s neck. “Head south, toward Parry Sound. Find the Westwood pack. Ask for Aryn, tell him you need to see Alaric. They’ll bring you to me.”

“Thank you,” I choke out, giving both of them another quick kiss. I watch as Pearl takes a part of my heart in her hands and jumps in the water, swimming away. A moment of panic hits me that Amelia will drown.

Mate will keep her safe, my owl assures me.

“I hope so,” I whisper, my trust in Pearl overriding that particular panic.

It’s Antonia, Zach, and Anthony who appear through the trees, and I allow the panicked look to remain on my face as I gear up to give the best performance of my life.

“Where’s Amelia?” Queen bitch herself asks, looking around.

“She shifted and flew away,” I say, letting the anxiety I feel fill my voice. Rather than having to look at Antonia’s face, I pretend to search the skies for our daughter.

“Shifted?” Antonia asks, and I nod, continuing to look up. I don’t need to see her face to know that she is confused by this development. “Impossible. She did magic.”

I spin. “Well, she shifted into a beautiful brown owl about twenty minutes ago, so I’d say whatever magic you thought she did was not her.” I don’t tell her that Amelia’s owl is white, so she has more of a chance of getting away. Even then, I’m taking a gamble. Right now, she is probably trying to calculate how feasible it is to hunt down every brown owl in a hundred miles.

She turns her head and glares at Zach, clearing her throat.

“You wouldn’t know anything about that, would you?”

He shakes his head vehemently.

“No, ma'am.” The words we both know are a lie slide off his tongue easily.

Shetsksand shakes her head.

“Find her,” she commands her brother, and I turn back around to continue my pretend search.

“And where do you think you are going?” I hear her snap, her magic lashing around me. “Did you think that you would get away with her disappearing?”

“I’m sure she’ll come back,” I wheeze out, the binds tightening with each word.

“For your sake, I hope she does.”

With that, the invisible binding around my neck tightens cutting off my air supply and the world goes black.
