“Nice to see you too, Pearl.” He chuckles and points to the kitchen.

I rush around him, catching a glimpse of my mate and launching myself into his arms. Immediately, my lips are on his and my hands are moving across his body. I feel him flinch under my touch. I pull away and hear him grunt in pain.

He’s got marks on his face, and his arm is hanging limply at his side.

“Who did this to you?” I ask, my eyes going dark. My hands instantly light up with my green magic, and I begin healing him. It will take a few minutes for me to heal all his injuries. There are multiple cuts, broken bones, and bruised ribs, a lot more injuries than I anticipated. As my magic finishes with his injuries, his internal trauma tugs at my magic, wanting to be healed, but I pull back. Those wounds need permission before we can tackle them.

He places both hands on my cheeks. “Agapi mou, I’m fine.”

“You may be fine now, but you weren’t. Who did that to you?”

“Pearl…”

I spin, rounding on Aryn. “Who?”

“I don’t—” he begins, holding his hands up.

“Who?” I growl again, stepping closer. “I sent my mate to you for safe haven, Aryn. Who did you let hurt him?”

Aryn shares a look with Loukas. I feel that my mate has stepped closer to me, but I don’t take my eyes away from Aryn.

“It was Matteo.”

“Matteo?” Skarlyt’s voice is full of shock and disgust. “As in Olivia’s Matteo?”

I turn to her.

“Olivia as in Lennox’s—” I begin.

“Don’t finish that sentence,” Skarlyt warns.

“Where is he?” I demand, once again turning to Aryn.

“Now, wait for a second Pearl. There’s more to this than…”

“He hurt my mate,” I declare.

“Mate?” A small voice comes from behind Loukas, and I turn to find a boy who looks like a mini version of my mate. The first thing I notice is the black eye and split lip, and the growl that comes out of me is more animalistic than I’ve ever heard from myself.

He steps back toward the wall, and I internally curse myself for showing aggression. I know he’s probably already afraid of everyone—especially every woman—he meets.

“No, no, please don't be scared,” I plead, remaining in place. “I'm so very sorry. You must be Zach?” He nods his head. His eyes are wide with fear, but he’s not looking at me. He’s staring at Skarlyt.

“Hi, little guy,” she says, but his eyes get even wider, and his body seems to vibrate in terror. Skarlyt sees this and, thankfully, decides to leave winning him over for another day. “I’ll go get Alaric and come right back.”

I didn’t know that Zach’s eyes could get any wider, but they do as Skarlyt disappears.

“Zach, this is Pearl. She is my mate,” Loukas says.

Zach looks between me and his father. I reach out my hand to him. He stares at it for a few long moments before he finally reaches out and tentatively places his hand in mine.

My magic itches to reach out to him, to heal his injuries, but I hold it back.

“It’s very nice to meet you, Zach.”

“You too,” he says quietly, slipping his hand from mine.

My eyes long to dart to Loukas, but I don’t move them from Zach.
