“How do you do that?” Skarlyt asks in awe, staring at Zach’s hands.

“What?” Loukas asks, confused.

“The smoke. His magic. It’s like three of the elements are so strong and in such perfect harmony that they blend together,” she says.

I can’t decide if Skarlyt is more, or less frightening when she’s curious, so I am not sure how Zach will respond to this change in topic.

Loukas’ brows furrow. “What do you mean?”

“I mean. I can access all four elements, but I could never make mine blend like that.” She holds up both her hands, creating a cyclone of water in one hand and a cyclone of earth in the other. She brings them closer together and I watch as she adds in her air.

Just like she said, she can’t get them to blend into one substance—not the way Zach does. You can still see how the water droplets expel the earth and air.

Zach’s eyes widen as he watches Skarlyt’s magic. She adds in fire for good measure. Even though, theoretically, the water should be putting the fire out, it remains, slowly spinning in a circle around her other three elements.

“Can you separate them?” she asks, once more pulling her hands away from each other, keeping the fire and air in one and earth and water in the other.

Zach brings his hands up and creates a swirling vortex in his hands, his forehead scrunched up in concentration.

After a few tense minutes, he releases his magic and shakes his head. Skarlyt’s magic evaporates.

“Maybe I can teach you, and you can teach me?” she asks Zach, stepping forward and crouching down in front of him. “Even without that, you can probably fly with your magic as it is.”

“Fly?”

Skarlyt nods, pushing her hands down, and I feel the air gathering around her as her feet begin to lift off the ground, hovering there for a minute before setting back on the ground. “Plus, we have a really big school that will teach you all kinds of things.”

“A school? With kids?” The fear in his eyes is slowly being replaced with curiosity. She nods with a big smile.

“My niece is about your age, and she goes to the school,” I tell him.

“And both my son and daughter go there,” Skarlyt adds.

“My children do too,” Alaric supplies.

“Will I go there, Dad?” he asks, looking up at Loukas, his eyes pleading.

Loukas ruffles his hair, a smile on his face.

“Why don’t we go see your sister first, and then maybe we can go on a tour.”

“Okay,” Zach says, sounding a little disappointed.

“Don’t worry, I’m sure your dad will say yes when he sees it,” Skarlyt tells him with a wink. “How do you want to do this?” She stands and directs this question to me.

“Take me and Zach first,” I say, glancing over at Loukas who nods. “Then come back for the alphas. If that’s okay with you, Zach.”

He looks between Skarlyt and me, seeming to gulp in fear.

“It will be okay, buddy. Alaric and I will be right behind you,” Loukas says before turning to me. “How and where are we going?”

“To the island,” I answer at the same time Skarlyt says,

“We’re going to teleport.”

“Is teleporting like portalling?” Zach asks.

Skarlyt’s forehead scrunches in confusion.
