“Homer is a former member of the Order.”

“What Order?”

“The Sect of Primordial Light.”

My heart began beating faster, picking up speed with every word she said. Panic clawed at my composure. The cult that trafficked children. The ones that came for me.“No,” I whispered.

“Homer said I had to keep that envelope and all the info inside it safe if I wanted to keep those pedophiles away from Josie.”

Jesus. Christ.

“I didn’t know what else to do. He told me some of the police officers and the police chief are members.”

Shit!

“I didn’t believe him, and I checked, Henny. He was right.”

“Fuck,” I swore, trying to breathe. My lungs dragged in air, but I still felt like I’d pass out.

Devil’s arm slid around my waist, tugging me against his side. This close, he could hear Amelia’s voice.

“I had to keep my baby safe. You understand, right? Tell me you do, Henny.”

“I do.” It wasn’t a lie.

“I know about your past, baby. They’re things you haven’t told me, but your nightmares did. You talked in your sleep.”

Shaking, I didn’t want to hear this.

“Amelia. Don’t.”

Devil didn’t need to learn this. Nobody did.

I wanted the truth to remain hidden behind the brick wall I erected.

“They got to you before I found you, didn’t they?”

Devil tilted my chin up, staring into my eyes with horror.

A tattooed, rough president of an outlaw motorcycle club, terrified of my past and the words that whispered of my living nightmare.

Ironic, to say the least.

Never judge a book by its cover.Amelia often said that about the people who came into her bar.You never know what life has tossed their way.

“I can’t,” I whispered in agony, replying to them both.

“You don’t have to, Henny.” I could hear the tears in her voice. “We’ll get those motherfuckers. I swear it. With this evidence—”

“I want to give it to Devil and the rest of the bikers,” I interrupted, noticing the relief in Devil’s eyes. “They’ll take care of the cult.”

Amelia didn’t like that idea. “It’s too risky. Josie won’t be safe.”

“What if I can guarantee that she will be? What if you both come here with me until it’s over?”

Devil’s brows rose, but then he nodded.

“I don’t know, Henny.”
