“I’ll be your patient,” Lennox says. “I’m twenty-five with no medical conditions, but I do live in a cursed house, so you never know.”

“I’ll add you to the list. At least it’ll look like I have patients.”

“Make a house call any time, Doc,” Lennox says. “Just don’t bring your girlfriend.” She waves and gets into her jeep.

Daisy and I weave through the full parking lot to get to my car. Off to the right, a couple in Bigfoot t-shirts are making out on the hood of a car.

“Hey,” I shout at them, because I’m pissy. “I just saw Bigfoot about twenty yards up the trail.”

The girl jolts away from the guy and looks at me, excited. “That trail?” She points at the only trail here.

“The same.”

Clearly, they didn’t notice us arriving in a jeep. The guy she’s with shoots me a dirty look, making it clear he’s far more interested in making out than hunting Bigfoot, but he gets off the hood of the car and follows the woman.

She stops at the trailhead and holds a hand up to him. “Back off. This tip’s mine.”

“Are you kidding me?” he huffs.

Daisy and I watch openly, fully invested.

“That was the deal. Hunting Bigfoot is more important than how good you kiss.”

The compliment seems to perk the dude up a bit. He kisses her cheek. “I’ll be waiting here for you, but if you’re not back in an hour, I’m starting my own hunt.”

She barely acknowledges his words and hurries up the trail.

I throw my pack on the back seat and toss Daisy’s in next to it before settling in behind the wheel.

“That was mean, Dr. Brooks,” Daisy says as she gets in and closes the door.

I shrug. “They were one base shy of having sex on that car. Children don’t need to see that.”

“I don’t see any children here.”

“Ididn’t need to see that.” I back up the car and head out of the parking lot, feeling all kinds of grumpy.

“I’m sorry about your clinic. It’s my fault. I never should have agreed to let you come with me.”

I sigh. “You couldn’t have known what would happen. I’m the one who insisted on following you into the woods.”

“Because I insisted on going to see an author with the intention of poaching her from the nice people at Lovemore Publishing.” She drops her head into her hands. “When did I become such a world-destroying asshole?”

If I weren’t driving down a twisty mountain road, I’d pull her into my arms and hug her. “World-destroying? You are a drama queen.”

She snorts. “Don’t make me laugh. I wanted my job back. The job I never should have quit in the first place, but it doesn’t give me the right to be an asshole.”

“You’re not an asshole.”

“Ugh, yes I am.”

I pull off onto an overlook and park. It’s a terrible choice, far too romantic for what I’m about to do, but everywhere would be romantic with Daisy. I twist in my seat to face her.

She stares back at me, confused. “Is there something wrong with the car?”

“You aren’t an asshole, Daisy. You’re brilliant and driven and capable, you’re gorgeous and you’re one of the few women who can make me laugh when I’m angry or upset. You’re a problem solver and you can save me by agreeing to marry me.”

Her eyes widen and fill with tears. I realize my mistake immediately. “You want me to marry you? Noah, we’ve only been not fake-dating for—”
