“Have you seen Jess?” I ask Theresa as she and her husband step off the dance floor.

“She and Emily left a few minutes ago.”

An elderly man, who I recognize as one of Theresa’s grandfathers, comes over to join her and her new husband. I make my excuses and head out to where my truck is parked on the street.

I should probably go to Jess’s house to talk to her about Katelyn, but I need time to figure out the best way to fight for her.

Tomorrow.

I’ll go over there tomorrow and show her how much I love her. I’ll make sure she knows I’ll be there for her once she’s ready to let me in again.

My last ex-girlfriend and I broke up because we realized our relationship had run its course. We spent less and less time together, and that hadn’t bothered either of us. In retrospect, the only thing that had kept us together for as long as it did was the sex.

And in time, that became more of a booty call.

I never loved my ex-girlfriend. But I am in love with Jess.

Once I arrive home, I take Butterscotch into the backyard to do his business. Then grab a beer from the fridge, drop my ass onto my couch, and surf through the channels.

I have no idea what I’m in the mood for—other than hockey. But it’s not even preseason yet, so that’s not going to help much.

I land on a World War II documentary about the Enigma code breaker and decide to watch the show. I have no idea why, other than it makes me think about Jess and her unexpected interest in the Second World War.

I’ve been watching the show for about fifteen minutes when the doorbell rings. Hoping it’s Jess, I go to answer the door. But instead of her, I find Kellan standing on my porch. He glares at me like my presence is somehow pissing him off.

“Any reason in particular you’re scowling at me?” I don’t bother to wait for a reply. I leave the door open and return to the living room and the documentary.

As expected, Kellan follows me. I drop onto the couch. He doesn’t bother to sit down. “What the hell are you watching?”

I grab my beer bottle from the coffee table. “A documentary about code breaking during the Second World War. It’s really interesting.” My tone sounds far from convincing, my frustration surrounding the situation with Jess tarnishing it.

Kellan still doesn’t sit. He parks his body between me and the TV. Asshole.

I lean to the side to peer past him. Kellan blocks my move as if we’re on the ice and he’s preventing me from scoring.

“What the hell?” I grumble. “I’m watching that.”

“Not anymore, you’re not.” He grabs the remote from the coffee table and clicks off the TV.

I point the mouth of the beer bottle at him. “When did you turn into such a pain in the ass?”

“I’ve always been one. You were just too blind to see it. You’re an idiot, by the way.”

“Why do I have a feeling my being an idiot has nothing to do with you being a pain in the ass?”

“No one can accuse you of being a dumb idiot. Just an idiot.”

“Thanks.” I think. I take a gulp of my beer and put the half-empty bottle on the table.

Kellan still doesn’t move. I force out a heavy breath and stare him down, hinting it’s time he gets to the point of this visit.

“What the hell are you doing with Katelyn?”

I groan and drop my head on the back of the couch. “Christ. Not you too. There’s nothing going on between us. And all the rumors you’ve heard to that effect are wrong.”

“You didn’t have sex with her Thursday night?”

“I’ve never had sex with her, period.”
