Page 97 of One More Betrayal

I push out of my desk chair and walk through the doorway. “Mornin’. How’s the headache?”

A smile flickers on Jess’s face like a match flame that hasn’t quite caught hold of the kindling. “It’s much better, thanks.”

“You sure? You seem…off.”

“No, it’s all good. I’m probably just a little tired. That’s all.”

I close the distance between us and pull her to me. “I missed you this weekend.” Christ, how I’ve missed her.

The flame catches and her smile brightens. “I missed you too. How was the—”

My mouth is on hers, not giving her a chance to finish the question. Making up for lost time.

If Jess didn’t have a strict policy against fucking on my desk or anywhere else in the office, I’d be taking a quick break and making the most of it buried inside her.

But then, kissing her had also been against her company policy, so there’s always hope.

My hand goes to the nape of her neck, and I deepen the kiss. My other hand rests on the curve of her spine, and I pull her to me so not a single drop of space exists between us. A soft moan vibrates through her and burrows in me.

“Are you positive you don’t want to drop your no-sex-at-work policy?” My lips curve into a lecherous grin.

She laughs, the sweet sound going straight to my cock. “Absolutely positive. I have a strict no-sleeping-with-the-boss policy.”

“A policy you have violated more than once in the past few weeks.”

“Right, which is why I have to be stricter about the no-sex-at-work policy.”

I kiss her exposed neck. “Do we get to ignore the policy tonight? Your place?”

“Actually, that won’t work.”

“Okay, my place.” I’m not sure I can survive another night without her in my arms.

She presses her teeth into her bottom lip and looks toward the window overlooking the mountains. “That won’t work either. Rain check?”

Disappointment turns to dry cement in my gut. “You have something planned?” I casually ask, keeping my curiosity from scorching my words. But I can’t stop feeling as though this has something to do with her past and her difficulty with trusting people—especially me after I screwed things up by going after Wilson.

“Yes,” she says rather quickly.

I wait for her to elaborate but she doesn’t. Not that she owes me an explanation. “How about tomorrow?”

“Tomorrow won’t work either.”

“Wednesday?” She can’t practice yoga while her ribs heal.

“I’ll have to get back to you on that.”

“Alright. Let me know when you can fit me into your busy schedule.” The disappointment in my gut grows heavier and heavier.

Her eyes widen, and it takes me a moment to figure out why. Shit. I’d meant for that to sound whatever-works-for-you casual, but it came out bitter. Broody.

“I’m sorry, Jess. I didn’t mean for it to come out that way. You don’t need to justify to me why you’re busy. I’m glad you’re not hiding at home anymore. You deserve to have a life again. It doesn’t always need to include me.”

Jess winces, but then smiles. “It’s just a really busy week. And then you’ll be gone again on the weekend. But hopefully next week won’t be as bad.”

“I guess that means I need to make the most of our time together while I can.”

So I kiss her one more time, our tongues gliding together, but I can’t shake the gut reaction that something is going on. She might be returning my kiss, but she’s also pulling away from me because of what happened with Wilson.
