Sebastian’s expression was dark as he loomed over me. “One key difference here though—I’m not your perfect man. I’m not safe. Nor am I normal, predictable, steady, or reliable.”

His hand skated over my jaw as he leaned down to whisper in my ear. “I’m definitely exciting and passionate though. And believe me, I’d drive you crazy in bed in ways you haven’t even dreamed of.”

All my blood rushed south as I bit my lip to stop a whimper escaping.

“But like you said, that’s not what you want.”

My whole body begged me to change my mind, but as Sebastian stepped back, I knew there was no point.

He might talk the talk, but he wasn’t about to walk the walk. Not with me, anyway.

Sebastian turned, and I knew he was going to leave. Desperation flooded me. I didn’t want him going and leaving me in this state. It’d lead to fantasies and want, things I couldn’t afford to give in to. If he stayed, maybe I could put him back in the friend box.

God, even in my head that logic sounded flimsy.

“Wait. Don’t leave.”

Sebastian paused with his back to me, his spine stiff.

“We’re not done hanging out,” I said firmly. “Besides, you still need to find all my yarn a new home, remember?” He grunted, which I decided to take as a yes. “Great! You get that sorted while I clean up the mess I made, then how about we watch a film?”

At some point during the film, I’d fallen asleep. My dreams were full of my cheek resting on a strong thigh and long fingers carding through my hair, stroking my neck, tracing my lips.

But when I awoke, I was totally alone.

Disappointment filled me as I sat up on the sofa, a blanket that hadn’t been there earlier sliding to the floor.

The television was dark, the flat empty. From the shadows falling across the room, I’d been asleep for a while.

Feeling groggy, I grabbed my phone from the table. Yep, it was late. No wonder Sebastian had left.

A message awaited me on the screen.

UNKNOWN NUMBER

This is Sebastian. Save my number.

Butterflies erupted in my stomach. He must’ve reached out to one of the others to get my details.

I added him as a contact, then before I could question it, I tapped out a reply.

Thank you for covering me with the blanket. You could’ve woken me though.

His response flashed up almost immediately.

Seb

It’s not a problem. You looked peaceful.

I bit my lip before catching myself. What was I doing? I was getting giddy over his message like a schoolboy with a crush.

Sebastian was right. He wasn’t what I was looking for.

I closed out of our chat and opened up the one with Steve. Scanning through the messages, I tried to summon even an ounce of the excitement I felt around Sebastian.

There was nothing.

But that didn’t matter. That wasn’t what I wanted.
