I was trying not to think about it, if I was honest.

Memories of that night months ago mingled with my current reality. They were tormenting each other, fighting for supremacy.

Why was this happening?

Hold on, sunshine. I’m coming.

The car turned left, flinging my already injured hand against the metal.

A small scream left my lips before I could silence it. I cradled my hand against my chest as nausea bubbled up my throat.

Please don’t be sick. Not again.

The first time I’d accidentally knocked my hand, I hadn’t been able to stop myself. The smell mingled with the damp, the mess sticky under my face.

Rob and Thomas. They’d introduced themselves before shoving me in here. Such ordinary names. A normal greeting.

These men were anything but.

Sebastian had been right. The lock had been nothing to them. They’d ripped it open on the first try.

They hadn’t even given me a chance to follow Sebastian’s instructions. They’d yanked me from my hiding place by my hair. My scalp was still stinging, but it was nothing compared to the pain in my hand.

I didn’t understand why he’d done it. Maybe to make sure I was compliant. Or to send Sebastian a message.

Whatever his reasoning was, the outcome was the same.

His heavy boot smashing repeatedly on my left hand. My dominant one. The one I used to write. Crochet. Masturbate, for fluff’s sake.

It’s going to be okay, I told myself. Sebastian will come.

He will.

I had no idea how he was going to get me out of this mess, or what I’d even done to get involved in it in the first place. It seemed to be connected to Danny, but how? Why?

So many questions. So much pain.

Maybe I should’ve called the police instead, but my gut had told me to call Sebastian. Had he called them? Were there units on their way to get me right now?

I held on to the only things I knew.

I’ll come for you. Remember that, Matty.

I’m coming to get you.

Hold on, sunshine.

Hold on.

Hold on.

Time passed. It could’ve been minutes or hours, but the car was slowing to a stop. I cringed as far back in the boot as I could, instinctively shying away from the pain that was surely coming.

The boot was opened and I squinted against the bright light that filled the space. An ominous shadow loomed over me. My eyes adjusted, revealing Thomas leering down at me.

“Out you get,” he said, jerking his head to the side. “There’s some folks here who want to meet you.”

Do what they tell you.
