“I understand your concerns,” she replies softly. “And that it hasn’t been easy for you. But you’re seriously something we needed, and maybe Weston feels—”

“Do you like him?”

There’s no way.

Not this woman.

This girl could get anyone she wanted without blinking. She wouldn’t even need to put any effort into it. With her long, curly hair and those sultry blue eyes, I’d put all the effort in if I were a man looking for someone. She’s a lockdown sorta girl. You don’t hit it and quit it with this one. You own and pleasure her so that no one else can.

Hollyn scoffs at me, then shifts her weight, and there it is.

I knew she was sweet and kind-natured, but I’m hella confused about how the hell she’d think someone like Weston was attractive. How doing nothing is appealing is so beyond my fucking ass I can’t even make an excuse up for it.

“Shorty, word of advice…you can do better.”

She opens her mouth, probably to give me more of that Weston is so wonderful line, but I’m so over this and him and Dylan not paying attention that I pivot for the men’s locker room.

“Reid…”

I freeze mid-step, and it’s annoying.

It’s frustrating.

It’s why I don’t associate with anyone, let alone a woman. They’re needy and whiny, and everything that’s something I don’t want to deal with.

“You’re not leaving, right? There have been improvements here. You have to get past the crying kid part.”

That’s the problem part.

These children look at me like I’m the devil reincarnate, and I actually feel bad. It’s not that I want to be a complete asshole to them—I’m trying not to—but when I have to keep repeating myself when they don’t move after I tell them to do something, I’m not sure what else to fucking do.

“You told me not to tell you.” I steal one more look over at her, and, not gonna lie, I’ll miss those blue eyes for a hot second and that fiery red hair. However, it’s gone within the next blink. “So, I’m going to keep my promise and not.”

Then I head into the locker room, leaving her to stew over what to do next.

It’s not my problem.

HOLLYN

Idon’t know what to do.

I thought everything was going okay. Reid wasn’t as broody, and the kids have really been trying to please him since they realized their butts would be kicked off the ice if they didn’t pay attention.

He’s a leader, whether he knows that or not, and the boys really like him. No matter how much they peer up at him with fear and worry in their eyes about what Reid is going to make them do next, they focus on him like his last word is going to change the course of their entire lives.

However, when I leave practice tonight, I’m in my feelings. Reid won’t listen at all to anything I say, and I’m back to square one with Weston over how the kids are going to manage their first game at the end of the week.

It’s something we need to talk about.

The parents are a bit hesitant but excited about Reid’s coaching tactics. It’s obviously not what they’re used to, but when word got around about him playing hockey for a professional team, they were ecstatic.

I’m not sure if they’ve put two and two together, but Reid is the most any of them have seen of an actual coach, so they’re thrilled.

Meanwhile, their hopes are about to be shattered with Reid’s departure, which leaves the team back at square one again.

“It’s going to be fine, Hollyn,” Weston says on the other side of the phone. “If he doesn’t want to stay, then fuck him. We’re not going to beg—”

“Weston, our first game is Friday. How are we going to get the kids to manage and remember what he’s taught them if he’s not here?”
